They may not get much love in their home country, where they command a relatively small but rabid fan base, but Airbourne are absolutely beloved overseas, particularly in Europe, where their new album is doing remarkably well in the charts.
Yes, it’s 2016 and a band of Aussie blokes from Warrnambool playing a quintessentially Australian brand of hard rock have a top 10 album in the UK and a Number 3 album in Germany. It’s even done pretty well here at home, where the band get little love from radio.
Airbourne’s latest album, Breakin’ Outta Hell, is currently sitting just outside the top 10 of the ARIA Albums chart at Number 13, despite the band admitting they get a larger following overseas where they regularly headline festivals.
“Germany is the first big country that took us on board in Europe,” the band recently told Tone Deaf. “Then we sort of blew up in France. It’s sort of big all over the place there. Most of mainland Europe we do well in and we’ve even grown in eastern Europe.”
The band are currently in the midst of a North American run, which included a recent stop in British Columbia, Canada. It was there that frontman Joel O’Keeffe sustained several broken ribs mid-song and continued to finish the set. It’s all on video – check it out here.
