Almost 20 years since their first album, and three years since their last, emo icons American Football have announced the release of a new album.

Ask any fan of indie-rock, and they’ll tell you that one of the most famous albums of the ’90s was American Football’s self-titled debut. Adorned with a now-iconic cover, the record would go on to be considered a classic of the emo genre, spawning countless imitators over the years.

Sadly, the band broke up soon after the album’s release, with frontman Mike Kinsella going on to form Owen. After 14 years though, the group reunited, touring Australia in 2015 and releasing a follow-up album in 2016.

Now, we’re about to get a brand new record from the emo pioneers.

After teasing a new record on social media recently, Polyvinyl Records has announced the release of the band’s self-titled third record, which is set for release on March 22nd, 2019.

“I feel like the second album was us figuring it out,” explained bassist Nate Kinsella. “For me, it wasn’t quite done. I knew there was still more.”

“We put a lot of time and a lot of energy into it,” echoed Mike Kinsella. “We were all thoughtful about what we wanted to put out there. Last time, it was figuring out how to use all of our different arms. This time, we were like – Ok we have these arms, let’s use them.”

Featuring the likes of Paramore’s Hayley Williams, Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell, and Elizabeth Powell from Land Of Talk, the band’s continued evolution is clearly apparent.

“I feel like my lyric writing has changed a lot over the years,” Mike Kinsella noted. “The goal is to be conversational, maybe to state something giant and heavy, but in a very plain way. But, definitely in this record, I keep things a little more vague.”

In anticipation of the new record, the band have also released a brand new single, titled ‘Silhouettes’. Listen to the new single, and check out the record’s tracklist, below.
