Win Butler, the frontman for Canadian indie-rockers Arcade Fire, has surprised fans by appearing at a Los Angeles karaoke bar over the weekend, where he decided to sing one of his own tracks.
While we’ve seen plenty of amazing karaoke performances over the years, and just as many equally bad ones, we’ve rarely come across footage of musicians performing their own songs. Sure, we happened to see Eddie Vedder join some Chicago buskers for a performance of a classic Pearl Jam track, but that was just a legendary muso being a top bloke.
As Spin notes, Win Butler (or DJ Windows 98, according to Twitter) was in Los Angeles on Friday night for an appearance as part of the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game. Playing alongside musicians such as Justin Bieber, Quavo, Common, Flea, and Jamie Foxx, the fact that his side, Team Clippers, won the game must have left Butler feeling like hitting up the city and celebrating.
As footage posted to Twitter shows, Win Butler found his way to a karaoke bar in LA’s Little Tokyo district, where they just happened to have Arcade Fire’s ‘Intervention’ on the roster.
“So, uh, Win Butler just casually dropped by some karaoke spot in Little Tokyo (Los Angeles) last night,” the Twitter account named ArcadeFireTube wrote. “I’m guessing he maybe noticed they had ‘Intervention’ on their repertoire and couldn’t resist, or something.”

Despite looking somewhat uncomfortable during the performance, Win Butler managed to sing through the entire track, pacing around the establishment and taking his tunes to the people. While we’re a little bit taken aback by his decision to perform his own song, you have to fact facts, who else could cover this song better than the bloke who originally sang it?
Undoubtedly, this impromptu performance was a highlight for any Arcade Fire fans in attendance, and to be honest, we’re a little jealous we weren’t there to witness it in person.
