Have you been hearing about musicians playing those secret gigs in loungerooms and backyards and wished you could have been there? Well, a bunch of Aussie musicians are giving you that chance, and it’s all for a good cause.
Amnesty International and Sofar Sounds have teamed up in recent years to run a series of gigs called ‘Give A Home’. In an attempt to help raise awareness of the constant refugee crisis, the organisations are holding over 300 concerts in 200 cities around the world, and of course, a few Australian cities have decided to get involved.
Performing simultaneously at secret venues around the world on Wednesday, September 20th will be the likes of The National, Jessie Ware, Jack Garratt, Kate Tempest, The Naked and Famous, and Oh Wonder. Meanwhile, on the local front, a bunch of Aussie acts in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast will be playing shows too.
In Sydney, Ngaiire, Megan Washington, and The Jezabels will be performing, while in Melbourne, Sampa The Great, Kate Miller-Heidke, Stonefield, and England’s Toothless will be playing secret gigs for free. The Gold Coast will see Ivey, Nick Cunningham, and Kyle Lionhart play, while Brisbane will be playing host to an as-yet-unnanounced secret lineup.
So how do you find out where these secret gigs are and get tickets? All you have to do is head over to the Sofar Sounds website, find the gig you’d like to head to, and enter the competition to win two tickets. As their website says, when you apply for the tickets, they request you to make a small voluntary donation to Amnesty International, but they stress that it’s completely optional. You’ve got until September 10th to get your name in the running, so act fast.
So if you’re a fan of free music from local acts, and you like to help support charitable organisations, make sure you get in the running to win some free tickets for these once-in-a lifetime gigs.
While we wait for September 20th to come around, check out The Jezabels’ ‘Pleasure Drive’, which they might just play at their Sydney show, below.
