US musicians Ben Folds and Jason Isbell have been the focus of a press release by the National Republican Senatorial Committee, labelling the musicians as members of the “unhinged left” for their political views.

No matter how you look at the world, one of the ugliest topics out there is that of politics. No matter whose side you’re on, you’re bound to receive a truckload of vitriol and insulting comments from the other side of the political spectrum.

Why, just last week, US grunge rockers Pearl Jam attracted a vast amount of criticism for their recent concert poster, which happened to feature an image of US President Donald Trump’s skeleton being picked over by a bald eagle. While their poster might have been a bit more on the extreme side, it showed the group’s left-leaning politics on full display.

Now, members of the US Republican party have set their sights on Ben Folds and Jason Isbell for their “unhinged” political views.

As Pitchfork notes, the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) issued a press release ahead of Ben Folds and Jason Isbell’s gig in Nashville, Tennessee, criticising Democratic Tennessee Senate candidate Phil Bredesen, for whom the pair performed at a fundraising concert.

In their press release, the NRSC called both Bredesen and the musicians “part of the unhinged, angry left and supports people who vehemently oppose President Trump.”

“Despite Bredesen’s moderate act, he continues to embrace people who have made it a habit of insulting the Tennessee voters who proudly supported President Trump,” explained NRSC spokesman Michael McAdams. “Today’s fundraiser is the latest example that Phil Bredesen is completely out-of-touch with a majority of Tennesseans.”

While Ben Folds was rather vocal in his support of US Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders in the 2016 Presidential election, Jason Isbell has been rather outspoken in regards to his views on Donald Trump.

As The Washington Post reports, the former member of Drive-By Truckers was targeted by the NRSC for his comments in 2016 where he criticised both Trump and his Conservative Cristian followers, stating “God is gone from those people.”

Of course, Isbell didn’t seem too fussed by this attention, taking to Twitter to share the press release. “I’ve been in the paper a few times now, but this one is my favorite. This is one I’ll be proud to show my grandkids,” he wrote, before adding “2 Unhinged 2 Quit”.

Phil Bredesen’s communications director, Laura Zapata, explained to The Tennessean that Jason Isbell was “a champion for working men and women”, while Folds was described as “a leading advocate for arts education.”

“The swamp needs to spend less time worrying about these popular recording artists and more time looking into Marsha Blackburn’s ties to hate groups and Russian nationals, and her illegal coordination with dark-money groups in Washington,” Zapata continued.

As Rolling Stone notes, Isbell decided to hit back at the NRSC while performing at Bredesen’s rally, taking the opportunity to reference their press release while onstage.

“I was thinking today about how it feels to be an unhinged leftist,” Isbell began. “For the first time in my life I’m hinged. I quit drinking years ago, I got a three-year-old daughter… I’m hinged as hell!”

Ben Folds has yet to respond to the NRSC’s claims, but considering his acerbic wit and sharp tongue, we can only assume he’ll have something equally intriguing to reply with.
