The bio of the Tasmanian quintet Captives states that they are “five dudes who live on an island, deprived of tropical fruits making music together”. Whilst the lack of vitamin C may become an issue down the track, the Taswegians have crafted a rollicking entrée that leaves the listener hoping the main course will be served up sooner rather than later.
Recorded in Melbourne, the five-track, self-titled EP cuts an impressive debut. Angst-filled dirty rock ensues with frontman Aaron Damon energising the band with his commanding vocal style.
‘Zombie Dog’ kicks off the EP, a groove-train ride of riff that somehow manages to pause long enough to incorporate a horn section within the two minute wrecking ball.
‘Jaded’ ploughs along before some more passionate vocals in ‘Satellites’ with Damon emphasising the line, “Hold your fire” across the track. Saturated in bass, ‘Snake In The Pit’ riles the masses with its frenetic energy, utilising a horn section with impressive results.
‘Anchors’ concludes Captives with a vibe that wouldn’t look out of place on a Foo Fighters release. Whilst providing just a glimpse of what this band are capable of, the debut release has enough meat to suggest that a full length album would be a worthy addition to the Australian rock scene.
