The wait for new music from the Deftones will be over soon, with frontman Chino Moreno revealing their new album will “definitely be out next year”.

Back in 2016, Deftones released their eighth studio album, Gore. Their first record in four years, it put an end to one of the longest gaps between albums for the band. Now, it seems as though fans won’t have to wait too much longer for new tunes.

Having revealed back in 2018 that they were planning to release new music “next year”, the band revealed back in March that while the new record is shaping up to sound like their commercial breakthrough, White Pony.

Needless to say, news like this undoubtedly excited their fanbase, but still left them wondering when we would be hearing this new album.

Now, we’ve received the most informative update to date, with frontman Chino Moreno revealing to NBC 7 San Diego that the band are gearing up to release their new record in 2020.

Speaking to the station about their annual Dia de los Deftones festival, Moreno revealed that the band have been “working on our record for about a year now.”

“We’re not doing that thing where we go in and lock ourselves in a room until it’s done; we are kind of enjoying our time making it,” he explained.

“It’s been a cool process, we get together, we work for a couple weeks, whether that’s just making noise and coming up with ideas and then everybody just goes home and comes back to work on ’em a little bit more. So, we’ve been doing that for a little over a year or so.

“This summer, we actually went into the studio and recorded an album’s worth of music. So, the music was pretty much done and the last few months have sort of just been working on the lyrics and the melodies and the singing parts. So that’s pretty much where we’re at right now…”

As Chino Moreno continued, he gave every fan of the Deftones the news they’ve been hoping for, revealing that the wait for album number nine will be over before we know it.

“It’ll definitely be out next year,” he revealed. “I’m hoping that it’ll be earlier on in the year, but I feel like once I give a definitive answer or speculate exactly when, I feel like we’ll be held to it, so I kind of want to continue on.

“Of course, it’ll be out next year, hopefully earlier than later. Our biggest thing is making sure that it’s good. We’ll be performing it, once it’s out, for the next two or three years, so we want to be sure it’s the best it can be and want to make everyone happy — including ourselves.”

While it remains to be seen just when the new album will arrive exactly, Aussie fans are already counting down the days until the band make their return to our shores for another exceptional run of tour dates.
