Confused Donald Trump supporters have lashed out at Garth Brooks, following an Instagram post from the country megastar this week.

While playing a show in Detroit Michigan, Brooks posted a photo of him wearing a Detroit Lions NFL jersey, with “SANDERS 20” on the back.

Many punters immediately took this as an endorsement for Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

And outrage from the republican leaning portion of his fanbase ensued!

One person said, “I will never spend a cent on anything that has to do with you. I will turn the station on one of your songs come on.”

Another shouted, “WELP….. NOT A FAN ANYMORE…SAD CONSIDERING IVE BEEN A FAN FOR WELL OVER 30 YEARS… ..CD’S WILL BE BURNED ONCE OFF WORK!!!”

However Brooks was actually wearing the jersey as a tribute to the legendary Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders, whom he also went too school with.

Brooks has never publicly stated where his current political allegiances lie.

However, as far as US country artists go, he is more progressive than most.

Back in 1992, he recorded the hit song ‘We Shall Be Free’ in support of racial and LGBTI freedom.

Perhaps there was a double meaning to the post?

Perhaps not?

But there’s no doubt Brooks will be enjoying the significant social engagement generated by the post.

The football legend entered the conversation on Twitter himself yesterday.

“Hey @garthbrooks, want to be my VP? #Number20for2020,” Barry Sanders tweeted.

Brooks replied shortly afterwards.

“Hey @BarrySanders I would run any race with you! #Number20for2020 HA!!! love you pal, g,” he said.

That was followed by a tweet from the Detroit Lions themselves.

The way things are going, Barry probably wouldn’t actually be the worst option!
