Damien Rice is returning to Australia next year to celebrate 25 years of his debut album, O.
The Irish singer-songwriter will play Melbourne’s Hamer Hall on Tuesday, February 9th, before two nights at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall on Thursday, February 11th, and Friday, February 12th.
The Australian dates kick off the ‘O’ 25th Anniversary World Tour, which will take Rice to 25 cities to mark the album’s 25th anniversary. After Australia, he heads through Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Seoul, and Taipei, before running across Europe, the UK, and the Americas that wrap up at LA’s Greek Theatre in May.
O came together on a shoestring. After walking away from a record deal, Rice spent time farming in Tuscany and busking across Europe before returning to Ireland in 1999. He wrote, recorded, and produced the album at home, funded by a loan from his father, with equipment and support from his second cousin, composer David Arnold.
Released on Rice’s own label in February 2002, the record went on to become a defining singer-songwriter album of the 2000s, carried by songs like “The Blower’s Daughter”, “Cannonball”, and “Volcano”. Rice has said he initially thought it would be the only album he’d ever make.
He has released just two studio albums since — 9 in 2006 and My Favourite Faded Fantasy in 2014 — but his stripped-back, confessional approach has kept his live shows in demand through long gaps between records.
