Blur pair Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon unveiled a new track last night during a short performance for a pre-Brit Awards fundraiser. The song titled ‘Under The Westway’ is a piano-led number that Albarn introduced as being ’written up the road from here [Bush Empire] a few weeks ago, It’s got a lot of words – for me anyway – but not as many as Ed Sheeran has’.
The band’s last material came during Record Store Day 2010, when their single ‘Fool’s Day’ was released as a limited edition vinyl and download. Blur are set to receive the ‘Outstanding Contribution To Music” award when to Brits go ahead on February 21st, it’ll be the first time all four members of the band will have played together onstage since T In The Park in July 2009.
The unveiling of ‘Under The Westway’ solidifies statements made by Coxon in a recent interview about the band’s future workings. “It’s pretty nice to be getting the Brit award. We haven’t planned the rehearsals yet, but there will definitely be another Blur album.”
The guitarist went on to describe the Britpop legends relationship since their 2009 reunion. “2009 was an amazing healing experience for us. We were really swept away with it and got a lot out of our systems. We realised how much we still had in common, that we are good friends, that we are brothers.”
“We’re always going to meet up and want to play things,” he continued. “We do like recording. Eventually, even if things aren’t around the corner, Blur will do more recordings together. We all love each other and still like making music so that’s not a bad start.
