Dave Grohl as reflected on his upbringing, noting it was his mother’s lack of musical rules that has led to him becoming a noted fan of Lil Pump.

For quite some time now, Dave Grohl has been known as the sort of musical leader who isn’t afraid to speak his mind. Thanks to this, we’ve come to know that not only is the Foo Fighters frontman a known fan of Billie Eilish, but that he’s also an avid supporter of divisive rapper Lil Pump.

“I got sucked into Lil Pump’s world and I’m stuck,” Grohl explained in early 2018. “I can’t get out!”

“When I was a kid listening to punk rock, all I wanted was noise and rebellion, whether it was satanic death metal or industrial noise,” Grohl later added. “If anybody dug into my record collection then, it’s like, ‘This is noise!'”

“I love a good trap beat and a nice 808. And one of the things I love the most about ‘Gucci Gang”’ is it’s two minutes long. It’s like a DRI song or a Minor Threat song. Look, I’m not going out and getting face tattoos anytime soon, but if [Lil Pump’s] ‘D Rose’ comes on, I am down.”

Now, in a new interview with his mother at Canadian Music Week (via Variety), Dave Grohl has explained it was his musical upbringing which taught him to appreciate every form of music.

Speaking to Virginia Grohl as part of the Mothers’ Day weekend celebrations in Toronto, Dave Grohl reflected on his early days as a music fan, and how he learnt from a young age to listen to almost everything.

“I was learning to play by listening to hardcore music like Bad Brains with these fat sticks, and then I would play normal drums and I would break everything,” Dave Grohl explained. “We didn’t have jazz drum lesson money.”

“I decided by age 12 that this is my life and my life will be music,” Grohl added, heaping praise upon his mother. “She never told me to not listen to anything.”

“When I was 14 I was listening to satanic death metal — she’d put on the Manhattan Transfer and I [would follow that up with Slayer’s] Reign In Blood.’”

“I knew it was your path,” Virginia Grohl added. “You convinced me early.”

“I’ve got a kid who wants to be a musician and listens to Lil Pump, and I’m like, ‘Really?! I’ll need to have the talk,’” Dave Grohl explained. “But [mom] never did it to me, so I don’t. And now I listen to Lil Pump.”

While it remains to be seen when the Foo Fighters might cover ‘Gucci Gang’ at a live show, it seems that the band have a bit on their plate for 2019, recently announcing a US tour with Weezer and Tenacious D.
