DMX fans have set up a makeshift memorial to honour the late hip hop icon, who passed away last week aged 50.

The memorial, which features flowers, candles, balloons, stuffed animals, posters and more, was created outside of White Plains Hospital in New York.

DMX died at the hospital after falling into a coma following a heart attack. He was said to have been in a vegetative state for several days prior to his passing.

DMX’s (real name Earl Simmons) family confirmed his death in a statement, saying: “Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end… he loved his family with all of his heart, and we cherish the times we spent with him.”

Along with the fan-made tribute, the Mayor of DMX’s hometown in Yonkers has promised to develop a lasting memorial to him, according to HotNewHipHop.

On top of that, the upcoming Universal Hip Hop museum also plans to memorialise DMX with a collection and archive that will recognise his contributions to rap.

“If Tupac was the heart of hip-hop, DMX was the soul. DMX was that realness, that grittiness, he didn’t create the grittiness of DMX to rap — that’s who he was,” said the museum’s chief curator Paradise Gray.
