Elton John has joked about the “Herculean effort” he put into getting his cocaine use noticed during the 1970s.
On Friday night, Sir Elton hosted a virtual watch-party for his biopic, Rocketman. The legendary singer-songwriter commentated on various scenes from the film using the twitter hashtag #RocketmanWatchParty.
In one such scene, John, portrayed by Taron Egerton in the film, goes on a cocaine-fuelled bender. The real-life Elton was clearly prepared to see the funny side of his past antics.
“It took a fairly Herculean effort to get yourself noticed for taking too much cocaine in the music industry of 1970s LA, but I was clearly prepared to put the hours in,” he tweeted.

“They shaved Taron’s head and thinned out his hair to make it look like mine in the ‘70s, which he hated. Welcome to my world, baby! At least yours will grow back…” Sir Elton tweeted.
John also revealed that seeing the film for the first time was very emotional for him. In reference to a scene which focuses on his drug use, he tweeted that “seeing this scene for the first time also set me off sobbing again.”
“Bernie (Taupin, John’s longtime lyricist and friend) was one of the people who tried to tell me to stop doing drugs and I wouldn’t listen, but he stuck by me and never gave up on me.”
It wasn’t the only scene which triggered an emotional response for Sir Elton.
“I broke down the first time I saw this scene of me hugging Little Reggie,” he said.
“I’d spent most of my adult life running away from myself. It was time to re-embrace the real me.”
