Fats As Butter 2013 is all set for its kick-off tomorrow, with the timetables set for the list of bands playing at Newcastle’s Foreshore for the annual music festival.

On the eve of the festival however, organisers have announced an interesting last-minute offer for punters wanting to catch the likes of Boy & Bear, Bliss N Eso, Gym Class Heroes, Owl Eyes, and the rest of the Fat As Butter 2013 lineup.

The Fat As Butter 2013 ‘Night Express Pass’ is a budget-priced, late-entry ticket is an exclusive deal that offers potential festival-goers “the opportunity to attend the evening session of Fat As Butter” for $75 (+b/f). The Night Express Pass allows entry to the festival after 6pm and are on sale now in extremely limited quantities from the Fat As Butter Oztix website.

A cut-price pass will allow attendees to catch the tail-end of blue-eyed soul crooner Matt Corby at the main stage, or Bombs Away and Dialectrix at the Fabio and Butter stages respectively; while still allowing time to catch full sets from Boy & Bear, Bliss N Eso, and festival headliners Gym Class Heroes.

Alternatively Night Express Pass holders can snag evening sets from hip hop duo Spit Syndicate, a DJ set from Ballarat indie group Gold Fields, electro songbird Owl Eyes (at the Butter Stage) or electro major Peking Duk, and The Aston Shuffle and Booka Shade spinning the decks (at the Fabio Stage – view the full timetable below).

Fat As Butter promoter Brent Lean of Mothership Events explains that the new budget ticket has been introduced to satisfy a niche demand from festival-goers. “Over the years we’ve had constant requests from the public who are unable to attend the festival for the full day due to other commitments,” says Lean. “In a unique initiative for the first time ever, we would like to offer people the chance to attend the festival at night for an affordable price.”

While full-paying Fat As Butter 2013 attendees will enjoy a full day’s worth of music, they’ll do so without the benefit of the camping grounds, which were scrapped following pressure from local residents last month despite gaining the support and approval of Newcastle Council.

Fat As Butter 2013 was to be the event’s debut as a camping festival, with grounds located near the Newcastle Foreshore providing for 1,500 festival-goers, but promoters pulled the plug on their Camp Shortland site just five weeks out from the event. Festival promoters Mothership Events had advised Council that they “don’t feel they can execute their plans for high level camping in the remaining weeks,” as previously reported, with Mothership indicating that punters with camping tickets had been upgraded to VIP and supplied with transport as compensation.

Plans to burn an effigy of Flo Rida at this year’s event were also scrapped. Designed as a ritual and symbolic purging of the international rap star’s blight upon the event ever since his 2011 no-show, which eventually spiralled into a messy court case between the international rapper and former Fat As Butter promoters, Mothership Music, that led to them entering voluntary liquidation.

Due to pressure from “the powers that be”, Fat As Butter eventually called off the decision to burn a totem of Flo Rida at the 2013 edition, but teased: “Oh well,we’ll just have to come up with another crazy idea.”

Festival organisers anticipate that Fat As Butter 2013 to draw a crowd of 18,000 people and around $1.8 million to local economy, according to their original camping application.
