Arena rock giants Foo Fighters have something of a history with the cretins at the Westboro Baptist Church. It all goes back to 2011, when the so-called Church decided to picket one of the band’s shows in Kansas City, Missouri.
Dave Grohl and co decided to confront the picketers, turning up at their protest on the back of a truck dressed as the characters they played in their homo-erotically charged music video for ‘Hot Buns’, a joke promo single released a month prior.
Sure enough, on Friday, protestors from the Westboro Baptist Church decided to show up at Kansas City’s Sprint Center, where Foo Fighters were set to perform. They parked themselves outside of the venue in protest of the band’s gig.
The band decided to respond once again, but this time with a little help from a certain ’80s music icon. Once again arriving on the back of a pickup truck, Grohl and his fellow Foo Fighters Rickrolled the Westboro Church protesters.
As footage from the scene shows, as picketers assembled across from the Spring Centre, a pickup truck rounded a nearby corner blasting Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ as a tongue-in-cheek jab at the notorious organisation.
As the truck nears the protestors, drummer Taylor Hawkins is seen holding a poster that reads “You Got Rick Roll’d (Again)”, as the unmistakable sounds of Rick Astley’s 1987 single ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ begin to play and things switch to party mode.
In minutes, Grohl, Hawkins, Pat Smear, and Nate Mendel are swarmed by dozens of Foos fans, who gather around the truck to create an impromptu dance party that drowns out the ridiculous protest. All the while, Grohl waves a sign that reads, “Keep It Clean”.

As Rolling Stone notes, the Westboro Baptist Church responded to the Foos’ Astley-flavoured attack on their protest by taking to social media. They wrote on Twitter, “Did [Foo Fighters] just #rickroll us? Oh well!” Uh… nice comeback, guys.
Readers can check out footage of the showdown above, preferably whilst reflecting on Grohl’s words from the band’s previous run-in with the Church: “God Bless America! It takes all kinds; I don’t care if you’re black or white or purple or green, whether you’re Pennsylvanian or Transylvanian, Lady gaga or Lady Antebellum.”
“Men loving women and women loving men and men loving men and women loving women — you all know we like to watch that. But what I’d like to say is, God Bless America, y’all!”
