Get your ears in tune with New York’s own Mindchatter as he talks us through his music, hobbies, and what’s to come.

Bryce Connolly, also known as Mindchatter, is one of New York‘s finest producing hit after electronic hit for our ears to wrap around. With several singles on Spotify, each filled with riveting beats, tender vocals, and thought provoking lyrics, you can soon see him diving into your high-rotation of favourite tunes.

Only two weeks ago, he introduced his newest single ‘Scared To Go Home’, which tells the tale of how Mindchatter feels about the loneliness of night life, and how it can be a bit depressing.

“It was inspired by a night out in NYC at a trendy club with way too many people in it. Trying to connect with others through alcohol, strobe lights and aggressive music can be incredibly depressing at times. I’ve always wanted to capture that feeling because I think it’s one we’ve all felt but rarely talk about.”

How did your artist name come about?

I think the inner dialogue that we all have with ourselves is the most important part of our lives. It can be a huge source of suffering even though most of the time we don’t realise it’s happening. I do a lot of free-association writing and meditating and all that seeps into my music heavily. Some of my lyrics are very stream of consciousness and non-linear so Mindchatter felt like the perfect artist name.

How would you describe your music to your grandma?

“I don’t think you’d like it, it’s computer music.”

Tell us about a few of your tracks; their titles and what they’re about?

My latest track ‘Scared To Go Home’ is about how depressing nightlife can be – watching people try to connect through booze and loud music can sometimes feel alienating. The irony of that track is that it’s kind of a party song.

‘Just Gonna Exist’ is an older favourite of mine. It’s not so much about anything in particular but meant to capture that ennui we all feel sometimes. There’s no real chorus but the line that stands out to me is “tell me the difference between ambition and insecurity… I’m just gonna exist.”

Our culture idolises workaholics but where does ambition and drive come from other than a lack of self worth? Sometimes the real heroes of mine are those people that just sit on park benches all day, content with doing nothing.

What do you love about your hometown?

I love the food, the shows, stoops, being able to walk and bike places… NYC won’t be the same for a long time unfortunately.

Career highlight so far?

Playing at Terminal 5 in New York opening for Polo and Pan.

Fave non-music hobby?

I’m a big chess guy, I play a lot online. Also, movies.

What’s on your dream rider?

Some hot tea for before the show and tequila for after.

Dream music collaboration?

Thom Yorke or Frank Ocean.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I really don’t plan that far ahead but I hope to have a lot more music written by then – the rest is up in the air.

What’s your go-to karaoke song?

Any Red Hot Chili Peppers song – I have a lot of nostalgia attached to that band.

What’s on the cards for the future?

I’m putting out an album soon as well as a few music videos that I’m excited about. Once things return to normal, I hope to get on the road and play shows again.
