The Terrys hail from idyllic south-coast town Gerringong and formed their band name after their very patient landlord.  We had a chat.

Think of Hockey Dad, Ocean Alley or Skegss, and you’ve got a blend of the five piece outfit that originally started out as a trio. Specifically, we have Jacob Finch (vocals), Lukas Anderson (lead guitar) and Ben Salvo (rhythm guitar) all jamming together in their sharehouse, and landlord Terry was okay with this (despite some noise complaints).

Fast forward to 2021, and Cameron Cooper (drums) and Trent Cooper (bass) are on board, with a sold out ‘Tezz Fest’ in Wollongong and Sydney to add to their runs on the (surf)board. On top of that, single ‘Pesos’, received acclaim from the  Life Without Andy and was named in the top 20 Australian Songs of the year by the AU Review.

If that wasn’t enough, they joined the stage with Dune Rats, Hockey Dad, Skegss and Ruby Fields at the Save Crowbar fundraiser show and were recently announced as one of six winners in the triple j Unearthed x NIDA competition.

Newly released single ‘Cost the Peace,’ reflects on what big nights out really to do the soul, but the vocals are hooky and the conversational, relateable tone does not mean you can’t look inward without having fun.

How did your artist name come about?

Three of us (Lewi, Jacob & Salvo) were living together in a shack we were renting in the backyard of our best mate’s Dad, Terry. After all the racket he put up with when we were practicing out the back we felt like we owed it to him to name the band after him, and he was stoked so it just kinda stuck.

How would you describe your music to your grandma?

It’s not always loud.

Tell us about a few of your tracks; their titles and what they’re about?

This newbie ‘Cost the Peace’ is about the repercussions of partying when you feel like death and you’re telling yourself you have to stop doing this.

‘Our Paradise’ is a cautionary tale of being stuck in the 9-5 grind, but if you take a breather you can realise Paradise is a mindset and it’s all around us (especially on the South-Coast yewww).

‘Pesos’ is about people only caring about money and a yucky greedy world.

What do you love about your hometown?

Our mates, waves and mochas from ShortyB (café).

Career highlight so far?

Selling out our debut tour! All the love form triple j – Our Paradise getting spun everyday, being Unearthed Feature Artist and winning the Unearthed x NIDA comp. All things we hoped for but never expected it to happen this quickly.

Fave non-music hobby?

Playing chess, skating (charging king of the hill – if you know you know) & surfing.

What’s on your dream rider?

A salad of devils lettuce.

Dream music collaboration?

Having Chillinit feature on of our records would be wilddddd.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hopefully all living pretty close to each other, with a sick home studio where we can write and drink tea all day.

What’s your go-to karaoke song?

Tequila.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Wear your blinders and don’t get caught up in what everyone else is doing, focus on what’s important to you.

What’s one obsession you have that no one would guess after listening to your music?

We’re all getting pretty good at origami. It’s becoming an obsession. Maybe we’ll drop some Terrys origami Merch??
