There’s every chance you’ve known and loved Maribelle Anes’ voice for years, having featured on popular tracks like Young Franco’s ‘Miss You’, ‘Girls Don’t Cry’, and ‘Angel’ and many more. But now as we look to the present and even the future, for Anes it’s been all about evolution and growing into her new persona: Vetta Borne.
Vetta Borne is Anes’ way of paying homage to her grandmother, while also breathing new life into her creative process and giving her music authenticity. On creating the EP, Borne says, “Writing Emelia was an emotional rollercoaster.”
“I spent a lot of time by myself in lockdown learning more about myself as a producer and where I could take my music. All of the lyrics on the EP came from me growing as a person and validating my own emotions and experiences.”
Borne’s latest EP, Emelia is a showcase of her finesse in the areas of songwriting, production and vocal engineering, being the culmination of two years of growth and evolving sonically as well as an individual.
The result? A magical offering best described as food for the soul. With its themes entailing the awakening of emotions, a crucial turning point in being able to find love and comfort within yourself, Borne’s vocals and lyrics will melt your soul into the prettiest rainbow of marbled swirled ice-cream.
We recently had the chance to have a lil’ chat with Vetta Borne as part of our Get To Know series. Check out our chat below.

My artist name originates from my grandmother, Violeta Sherborne.
How would you describe your music to your grandma?
I would describe it as music you can dance and cry to. It’s funk/pop with honest lyrics.
Tell us about a few of your tracks; their titles and what they’re about?
The whole EP is the journey of what 2019 was like for me. You Can Go is the realisation of knowing you deserve so much better from somebody. Beyonce is about friendship, and expressing your love for the people in your life. ‘Kissing Strangers’ is about moving on from a past relationship, and hoping that the person from your past is doing well and growing from it.
What do you love about your hometown?
I love the soul, R’n’B community in Melbourne. It’s a relatively small town when it comes to the music world, so everybody is super supportive of each other. We all just want to see each other do well!
Career highlight so far?
One of the first Aus songs I wrote was ‘On Fire’, with Carmada. Charli XCX sang it on Like A Version and then performed it on the Groovin’ The Moo tour. She came up to me and complimented my songwriting, as a young artist/song-writer. That meant a lot to me from an artist I look up to.
Fave non-music hobby?
I love playing basketball. I also love to cook. Every now and then I’ll get addicted to gaming too.
What’s on your dream rider?
Roses, Soju, Delicious food and desert, vapes (bad habit, I know but they’re delicious) and something for everyone to play Mario Kart on before the set. My rider would mostly cater to the people around me, I don’t need much for myself.
Dream music collaboration?
Ne-Yo, Ryan Leslie, Janet Jackson, Timbaland, The Neptunes… the list goes on.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I see myself writing/producing music for other artists, I see myself still releasing music as Vetta Borne, making music in a cute house with people I love to work with. I see myself travelling the world again still doing what I love with people I love.
What’s your go-to karaoke song?
Anything Mariah Carey or ‘Listen’ by Beyoncé. Anything I can scream/sing in either my ugliest or best voice!
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
To know who I am, and stay who I am. It’s so much easier said than done when you’re in a room full of different people all the time.
What’s one obsession you have that no one would guess after listening to your music?
I have a weird obsession with weird/geeky things like sand art and liquid motion toys, lava lamps etc. I really like weird things that I can stare at for hours. I literally don’t know why. I’ve also started collecting those Pop! Toys as well.
