Since the tragic passing of Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell in 2017, Guns N’ Roses have taken to covering the band’s 1994 track ‘Black Hole Sun’ during live performances.
The band have recently been sharing curated performances from their 2016-2019 ‘Not In This Lifetime Tour’. The latest instalment of the ongoing series features professionally shot footage taken from the band’s appearance at Tennessee’s Exit 111 festival in 2019; a performance that saw them cut their teeth on the Soundgarden classic.
The Guns N’ Roses rendition of ‘Black Hole Sun’ kicks off at the 6:30 mark. Check it out below.

In September last year, Brandi Carlile teamed up with Soundgarden’s surviving members to deliver covers of ‘Black Hole Sun’ and ‘Searching With My Good Eye Closed’ as part of a special Record Store Day 12″.
Whilst the two-track release, A Rooster Says, was initially only available in its physical iteration; Carlile surprise-released the tracks on streaming services on New Years Eve. A little souvenier of a terrible year.
In an interview with Rolling Stone delving into the collaboration, Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil and drummer Matt Cameron praised Carlile’s interpretation of “Searching With My Good Eye Closed.”
“That was Brandi’s choice and it was a good one,” Cameron said at the time. “‘Searching With My Good Eye Closed’ is one of Chris’ greatest songs, it has so much depth. It’s a colossus. Hearing Brandi and the twins completely rock the fuck out on that tune was amazing. I love how it turned out. Kim’s solo is pretty incredible too.”

On December 11th, the estate and family of Chris Cornell shared a surprise album No One Sings Like You Anymore, a collection of covers, recorded by Cornell back in 2016.
The record featured a cover of Guns N’ Roses’ Appetite for Destruction track ‘Patience,’ as well as versions of Prince’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’, John Lennon’s ‘Watching the Wheels’, Lorraine Ellison’s ‘Stay With Me Baby’ and Electric Light Orchestra’s ‘Showdown’ and more.
“This album is so special because it is a complete work of art that Chris created from start to finish,” Chris’s wife Vicky Cornell said in a statement. “His choice of covers provides a personal look into his favorite artists and the songs that touched him. He couldn’t wait to release it.”
