Not even the strongest of minds can resist being hypnotised by Sarah Blasko’s latest album, I Awake (Live At Sydney Opera House).
The Australian songstress takes her live audience, as well as her album listeners, to a far tranquil place free from all distress. This marathon 18-track live record accurately depicts what Blasko has to offer with her music today, incorporating songs from previous records that add to the magical feel of her latest studio album, I Awake.
Performed live at the Sydney Opera House with the Sydney International Orchestra, one might think the surroundings will be far too dynamic for her ethereal indie-pop presence. However, the orchestra doesn’t overshadow Blasko’s performance, offering a more intimate feel to the grand venue.
The album begins with an eerie track from her second LP, What the Sea Wants, The Sea Will Have, titled ‘Explain’. It allows the vocals to be the sole focus, offering listeners a steady introduction for what’s to come.
The singer-songwriter performs five tracks from her third album, As Day Follows Night. Among these is a heavenly yet haunting rendition of ‘All I Want’ where her soothing voice sways with the riffs.
The woodwind, brass, string, and percussion of the Sydney Orchestra all come together with a flawless performance of ‘Lost And Defeated’. The singer-songwriter also plays all 12 tracks from her latest album, I Awake, staying true to the exact order like chapters to a book.
The highlight of this collection is the track ‘Here’. The vocalist’s raw emotion reaches its peak, complete with a dramatic string section.
Although not too different from her studio albums, Blasko’s rendition of her masterpieces in a live venue demonstrates her brilliance as a talented and passionate artist.
