Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris has revealed he couldn’t care less about the band being ignored by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Just last week, Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson hit back at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, calling it “an utter and complete load of bollocks.” Making the comments while speaking in Melbourne, Dickinson said the band should “absolutely” be inducted, having been eligible since 2005.
“I actually think the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is an utter and complete load of bollocks, to be honest with you,” he began. “It’s run by a bunch of sanctimonious bloody Americans who wouldn’t know rock and roll if it hit them in the face.”
“They need to stop taking Prozac and start drinking fucking beer.”
However, while Bruce Dickinson seems to have his heart set on being inducted into the Rock Hall, his Iron Maiden bandmate Steve Harris seems to be completely unfazed by the notion.
Speaking to Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon (via Blabbermouth) recently, Harris explained that a potential induction is the furthest thing from his mind.
“No, it doesn’t irritate me or make me laugh,” he began. “I don’t really think about it, to be honest. It’s not something I really — and I don’t wanna sound blasé about it — it’s just I don’t really think about it.”
“I think awards are things that are nice to have when you get them, but it’s not something you’re really striving for — it’s not what it’s about it. It’s never been about that.”
“It’s aways been about just trying to make good music and go out and play good live shows, and that’s it, really,” he continued.
“Hopefully people will appreciate it. It’s probably nice when people give you awards — don’t get me wrong; I think it’s great — but it’s not something that you would lose sleep over if you didn’t get any.”
“It’s the way that I am,” Steve Harris continued. “I don’t know. Maybe the rest of the guys might think differently to me, but that’s the way I think. It’s not that I don’t care about [awards].”
“It’s just… And it’s not that they’re not meaningful when you do get ’em — it’s nice. But I certainly don’t worry about it or anything like that.”
“I think other people are the ones that make a bigger deal out of it than us, about whether we got one or not.”
Harris’ comments seem to echo the remarks made by Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor recently, who explained that he “couldn’t give less of a shit” about the fact that his band are yet to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
“I saw somebody write something online or comment on Twitter like, ‘What could be less rock and roll than the fuckin’ Hall Of Fame?’ And that is authentically how I feel about it,” Reznor explained. “I’ll say this: It’s nice to be appreciated. It’s nicer when it feels like that’s coming from a place that you care about.”
“Like, a Grammy doesn’t mean a fuckin’ thing. It means a few assholes in a room that are trying to make a TV show have good ratings deciding, ‘Let’s give it to this guy.’ It doesn’t feel like it has any meaning behind it.”
“The worst would be if we did [get inducted] and then what? We’d have to fuckin’ show up and jam? I can’t even imagine what that would be.”
