Mark David Chapman, who shot John Lennon dead outside his apartment in New York City on December 8th 1980 has had his latest application for bail turned down. The 55 year old was on his sixth parole application in a video interview with the New York State parole board from Attica Prison in upstate New York. In a written decision, the board cited his complete ‘disregard’ for ‘the norms of our society and the sanctity of human life’ by planning and pre-meditating Lennon’s murder.

“This premeditated, senseless and selfish act of tragic consequence… leads to the conclusion that your discretionary release remains inappropriate at this time and incompatible with the welfare of the community,” the New York state parole board wrote. Last month Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono called for his parole to be denied. Chapman will again be entitled to apply for parole in two years time.
