We all want to be rockstars at some point in our lives, it’s undeniable, and for some of those in higher places such as actors, it’s much easier to have a quick dip into the world of music, however this apparently makes one movie star “sick”.
Johnny Depp, a well documented music lover, has recently slammed actors who abuse their level of status to forge a career in music, as Sydney Morning Herald reports.
Depp spoke with reporters over the weekend in Berlin at his latest film premiere Mortdecai, stating that actors-turned-musicians “always just made me sick, that whole idea for me is a sickening thing.”
His tirade ensued, the 51-year old saying “the kind of luxury now is, anybody with a certain amount of of success, if you have a kind of musical being, you can go out and start a band and capitalise on your work in other areas, but I hate the idea, ‘come see me play the guitar because you’ve seen me in 12 movies'”.

This strikes as a rather farcical remark considering Depp has had no issue stepping onstage and recording tunes with bands including Aussie bound two-piece The Black Keys, Paul McCartney, Oasis, Marilyn Manson, Aerosmith and Eddie Vedder – just to name a short, unflattering few. One must wonder if he therefore makes himself “sick”?
In addition to this it strikes as a fairly careless comment to throw out into the air at the moment considering his supporting cast of Mortdecai includes Gwyneth Paltrow, a well-known actor who explored the worlds of the recording industry some years ago.
Depp however does somewhat acknowledge his career with music, “I’ve been very lucky to play on friends’ records and it’s still going. Music is still part of my life” however flatly confirms “But you won’t be hearing The Johnny Depp Band. That won’t ever exist.”
His comments are rather pertinent with Aussie actor Abbie Cornish dropping her debut hiphop track just yesterday as well as Eddie Murphy releasing a pretty rad reggae jam some weeks before that.
Mortdecai hits Australian cinemas January 29.
