A Jurassic 5 Australian Reunion Tour 2014 has been announced.
Six years after the group called it a day in 2007, the beloved hip hop group are returning to the country they were once regular visitors of in their hey-day in a series of shows presented by Live Industry and MTV.
The group have been temporarily back in action following reuniting at April’s Coachella festival, to widespread acclaim, and have spent the rest of year taking in short live tours across Europe, the UK, and the US, and next March, it’s Australia’s turn, playing headline shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.
Long-term Australian fans may have been tipped off of the group’s reunion plans after Jurassic 5 MC Chali 2na was announced as part of the sideshows for the 25th Anniversary Silver Edition lineup of Bluesfest, while the celebrated rapper has indicated plans for a full-scale Jurassic 5 tour since as far back as January.
Speaking to Triple J, Chali 2na discussed how the band’s last visit to Australia in 2007, off the back of what would be their last album, 2006’s Feedback, was the catalyst for their split of the six-piece crew, consisting of emcees Chali 2na, Mark 7even, Zaakir, Akil and DJs Cut Chemist and Nu-Mark.
“As a family, sometimes you don’t like your brother. We went through a period of that,” Chali 2na explained. “We as a group – we’ve been together almost 20 years now – you’re going to have your ups and downs. It’s just a trip because Australia really caught our down.”
The 2014 reunion tour however, will see the group back on the up – performing from their popular catalogue, including 2000 breakout LP Quality Control and its 2002 follow-up Power In Numbers, which earned the group the distinction of being one of the more outward thinking West Coast hip-hop crews of the ’00s, with their bold wordplay and playful group mentality.
With their unique harmonies and dynamic stage presence, Jurassic 5 put on an amazing, high-energy live show, which will certainly thrill long-time fans and new audiences alike.
