Legendary performer and songwriter Leonard Cohen, known for his incredible body of work including iconic songs like ‘Hallelujah’, has died at the age of 82.
Cohen’s passing has just been announced on his Facebook page, stating that “we have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries” and announcing a memorial service taking place in Los Angeles.
At this stage, no cause has been given for his death.
Having performed and recorded consistently since the 1960s, Cohen’s final work was his latest album You Want It Darker, released just last month. Originally rising to prominence alongside fellow songwriting luminaries like Bob Dylan, the Canadian was a prolific writer and poet before the release of his 1967 debut Songs of Leonard Cohen, going on to record a further 13 albums and receive countless awards and nominations, from Grammys to induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Recognised as truly untouchable songwriting talent and performer, his passing is another monumental loss for a global music community still rocked by the passing of fellow icons like David Bowie and Prince.
