Marilyn Manson has shared the cover of his forthcoming photo book titled Marilyn Manson by Perou: 21 Years in Hell, featuring over 350 photos taken over 21 years by photographer Perou.
Posting an image of the black hardcover book to his Instagram, Manson wrote of renowned photographer Perou: “New book of photos he has taken over two decades. He still insists on taking more. It’s an honour to have him publish all these rare and strange moments.”
Perou and Manson first met when the fashion photographer shot the shock rocker for a 1998 magazine cover shoot and soon found himself as the ‘SAY10’ hitmaker’s principal photographer — and continues to be 21 years on.
“I often get asked, ‘Who was your favourite person to photograph?’ or ‘Who is the best person you’ve photographed?’” Perou said. “It’s always ‘Marilyn Manson.’ Which is just as well, considering how many times I’ve photographed him.”
Many of the snaps have been previously unpublished and will feature “conceptual portraits, informal behind-the-scenes images and onstage images that give a rare insight into the world of Marilyn Manson. ”
Perou elaborated on the series of photographs, describing it as being “fragments in no specific order; as confused as I have been for much of my time in Marilyn Manson’s company. Some visual clues that I use to remember where I’ve been and what I was doing.” He continued that “the last 21 years, dipping in and out of Marilyn Manson’s stratosphere, have been a blur: people, events and places coming in and out of focus.”
“The early years more disorientating than those that followed.”

Remembering the first time he met the British photographer, Marilyn Manson said: “I just remember the first time you showed up you had more rings than me. You look still, and did at the time like you were going to be in that movie Romper Stomper: bomber jacket, high laced boots, fully British, barely understandable.”
“I became automatically comfortable around you and that’s the most important part.”
Along with Manson, Perou has photographed other world-famous stars such as David Attenborough, Led Zeppelin, Coldplay, David Beckham, Jay-Z, Missy Elliott, The Spice Girls, and U2.
Marilyn Manson by Perou: 21 Years in Hell is out in bookstores in June.
