There’s good news in the pipeline for Mastodon fans, with the heavy legends getting ready to release some “heavy” music in the near future.
It’s currently been just over a year since we last received new music from Mastodon. Back in September of 2017, the band released Cold Dark Place, their second EP, and first release since Emperor Of Sand back in March of that year.
Since then, the band have been busy touring the world, including a stopover in Australia for the first Download Festival last year. However, while fans might be wondering when we’ll be hearing new music, there won’t be too much of a wait, with the group saying new tunes are on the way.
Speaking to Kerrang recently, Mastodon frontman Brent Hinds revealed the band hit the studio last month to record their first piece of music in over a year. While details are scarce, Hinds described one of their new tracks as “a fun listen.”
Thankfully, guitarist Bill Kelliher was a bit more open, explaining that the track is “a basher” and “brutal”, while drummer Brann Dailor explained “It’s as heavy as I’ve heard us in a while.”

Sadly, 2018 also saw Mastodon struck with a bit of tragedy, with longtime manager Nick John passing away from pancreatic cancer back in September. Just a matter of days earlier, Mastodon had cancelled a run of shows with Dinosaur Jr., citing a “critical situation of a member of the Mastodon family.”
Mastodon later took to Facebook to express their sorrow at John’s passing. “Thank you for your guidance, your wisdom, your never ending hard work and dedication to Mastodon, always pushing and reaching turning over every stone to make sure we were always protected and always had every opportunity any of us could dream of,” they wrote.
“Thank you for making yourself available morning noon and night to handle every crisis or situation that ever came up. Thank you for being so passionate and believing in us with such enthusiasm that we considered you part of the band.”
“Thank you for your smile and your infectious laugh but most of all, thank you for your unconditional love and friendship, we love you very much and are going to miss you more than we know. We love you Nick John. RIP.”
While the band have since hit the live stage again for a one-off show and are set to tour the UK soon, though there’s no word as to how Nick John’s passing will affect their future plans.
