Boy have we got some tasty mixtape treats for you this week! From international acts like London’s Flying Ibex and California’s Rogue Waves to more local acts like Axolotl, Royston Vasie and our feature track of this week by Melbourne’s own Polo Club, there’s sure to be something to float your musical boat!
Polo Club – “Live For Tonight”
‘Live For Tonight’ is the first single from the upcoming EP for Melbourne group Polo Club. Coupled with slick production, beats and vocals from Dyl Thomas and Adam Fitzgerald, Polo Club seem to have found their feet on this new track taking everything to the next level, ‘Live For Tonight’ is layered with grime, electro beats, rhymes to boot! Keep an eye for the EP dropping in 1st July.
Flying Ibex – “You Dared Me”
The latest track from the London-based trio is bound to give you visions of lazy beachside days. Like a ska-infused Grizzly Bear, lead singer Barnaby Keen, channels all the best aspects of today’s indie frontmen while managing to infuse some much needed soul into the rhythm-heavy track. Top stuff!
Royston Vasie – “Inside”
Slacker Stoner rockers Roytson Vasie have dropped their first single ‘Inside’ from debut album “Tanah Merah” due out Friday 14th June through local indie label Milk Records, run by Courtney Barnett. Starting with the bands signature slacker grunge guitar sound, followed by the pounding drums, then enter the raspy vocals of Mugsy and you’ve got yet another perfect recipe for a killer Royston Vasie track!
Axolotl – “Avalanche”
With Ella Thompson’s sweet as pie vocals serving as the primary layer to this simple yet intricate track, the Melbourne band truly are going from strength to strength. With synthy goodness living harmoniously alongside handclaps and nearly-untarnished vocal melodies, “Avalanche” will bring back memories of your favourite music festival moments; think of it as chillwave without the pretense.
Rogue Waves – “College”
With jangly as fuck guitars being the guiding point of the track, this one will definitely appeal to those in need of a good cheer up this week. It’s hard to believe the Californian band have been around for over a decade; their music sounds current as fuck, and their fanbase only keeps growing. Listen to this one if you need a taste of sunshine.
Lorde – “Tennis Court”
16-year-old New Zealand sensation Lorde – moniker of Ella Yelich-O’Connor – once again shows pop instincts beyond her teens with this brilliant followup to her breakout single, ‘Royals’. ‘Tennis Court’ again features Yelich-O’Connor’s sugary sweet RnB vocals dancing over the top of an infectious hip hop beat. Good luck getting this one out of your head. This girl is in year 12 and already has the music world wrapped around her talented, musical finger – excuse us while we feel inferior.
Gold Fields – “Treehouse”
It’s no wonder this Aussie troupe have taken America by storm with appearances at SXSW, a performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live and a 28-date US tour. Their latest, ‘Treehouse’, will temporarily summon you out of the winter cold and take you to a far away Caribbean island. The five-piece’s lush indie pop is once again on point, combining rumbling drums, hand-clapping and a hazy vocal hook to create a summery anthem that will make you start seeing palm trees.
Illy – “On & On”
Illy has returned with the first track off his upcoming album due for release later this year. Back in a big way, ‘On & On’ is incredibly upbeat, fun and catchy tune featuring female BV’s. There is pretty much nothing not to like about this track, it’s got sweet synths, electronic drums and positive rhymes. A nice little summer vibe anthem to keep our hearts warm in the dreary winter.
