Sunday is the new solo project from Aaron Shanahan, who you may be familiar with from Miami Horror or Wunder Wunder. He’s just released his sparkling debut single ‘Waiting For You’.

It’s a warm, spacious number built around throbbing, glitchy beats and Aaron’s signature feather-soft tones – a soundscape inspired by a calming stay in the Californian desert. Celebrating his return, he’s put together a playlist for us, dubbed ‘Songs of Inspiration’.

Have a listen to the tracks below, including the new single. ‘Waiting For You’ can be found on iTunes, and you can keep up to date with the new project over at Sunday’s Facebook page.

Fleetwood Mac – ‘Sara’

Fleetwood Mac are able to create an ethereal world that sounds like you are listening directly to angels. This sound is something I connect to deeply, especially Christine McVie’s haunting and soft harmonies that sail through the background of this song.

Björk – ‘Undo’

There is something very deep and primitive about the emotion of this beautiful song by the amazingly fearless Björk. I have found this song releasing deep emotions within me that have healed and inspired me. To be an artist of such connection and grace is all I can hope to aim for.

Peter Gabriel – ‘Mercy Street’

Peter Gabriel was a major inspiration for me to do a solo project and Sunday. I spent a month in an RV in the Joshua Tree and I was listening to Peter Gabriel during this formative time, as he is an example of something having a distinct voice whilst making great and interesting pop music.

Jeff Buckley – ‘Lilac Wine’

I grew up listening to Jeff but have been rediscovering his beauty and “grace” as a connected individual to his instrument. He was a true natural who let music flow through him like water.

Michael Jackson – ‘Will You Be There’

I find similarities between Jeff Buckley and Michael Jackson, even though they seem to be so different. Both are natural musicians who seem to be connected on a higher level. They were music. Michael Jackson breathed and lived music. He makes me want to be a better musician every day. This song has an amazing introduction that shows that he didn’t have limits to his creations.

Maribou State – ‘The Clown’ feat. Pedestrian (Axel Boman)

On tour I was obsessed with this remix by Axel Boman. It complemented the feeling I have at airports of isolation whilst being amongst many people. The most inspiring part of this remix for me are the sounds, that are minimal but so emotive.

Radiohead – ‘All I Need’

A perfect song.

Jamie XX – ‘Gosh’

Another tune I was obsessed with as it came to me when I needed to hear something fresh, and the layers of samples creating different rhythms and textures made me think about production in a completely different way.

Randomer – ‘Juju’

I found this song on an amazing mixtape. It’s tribal whilst being contemporary and electronic. I’m hearing more of this sound emerging and I find it very exciting and inspiring.

Kate Bush – ‘Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)’

Listening to fearless artists really inspires me. Sometimes when creating music your mind and ego can play tricks with you in what a song should be. A song like this reminds me of the importance of getting the ego out of the way of the creative process and allowing art to be made with flow and grace.
