Often cited as one of the most famous (albeit depressing) frontmen of all time, Morrissey has just been bestowed with yet another title, after US electronic musician Moby compared the musician to a “weird drunk uncle”.
In the last few months, Morrissey has garnered quite a lot of criticism for his statements in regards to the recent cases involving Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey, with the former frontman of The Smiths at first saying he believed they’d been treated unfairly, then claiming he never said such a thing, and then remaining uncharacteristically silent after audio of the interview was released.
Most recently though, Morrissey attracted attention for a bizarre, seemingly self-published interview in which he stated, amongst other things, that “halal slaughter requires certification that can only be given by supporters of ISIS.” Needless to say, fans began to wonder just what the heck was going on.
Despite a response from the singer in which he made clear that he “despise[s] racism”, and that he “would do anything for my Muslim friends, and I know they would do anything for me”, the musician continued to generate controversy.
In the wake of this odd behaviour, US electronic musician Moby was recently interviewed by The Telegraph, where the noted animal activist took the time to comment on Morrisey’s behaviour.
“This reminds me of a Chris Rock skit, where he’s talking about a weird drunk uncle,” Moby noted. “Everyone in the family is like, ‘OK… we love him but he’s gonna do something weird. Just stay away.’”
“I don’t know Morrissey,” he continued. “I liked The Smiths, I like some of his solo records, I appreciate that he’s a vegan… but I kind of wish he would not say weird, racist things.”
Of course, Moby’s desire for Morrissey to not say “weird” things might come off a little strange to some, especially after the musician revealed earlier this year that he had been supposedly sought out by “active and former CIA agents” in order to help make the public aware of… well, something involving Donald Trump.
“They were like, ‘This is the Manchurian Candidate, like [Putin] has a Russian agent as the President of the United States,’” Moby explained in an interview in January. “So they passed on some information to me and they said, like, “’Look, you have more of a social media following than any of us do, can you please post some of these things just in a way that … sort of puts it out there.’”
“It’s really disturbing and it’s going to get quite a lot darker,” he revealed. “Like the depths of the Trump family in business and their involvement with organized crime, sponsored terrorism, Russian oligarchs, it’s really dark. I guess we should all, like, fasten our seat belts and hold on.”
Needless to say, it’s a little hard to work out who is saying the strangest things right now.
