On Wednesday, it was announced that the final living member of Motörhead’s ‘classic’ lineup, “Fast” Eddie Clarke, had passed away at the age of 67. Following the deaths of Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor, and Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister in the past few years, surviving members of the band have now announced they have plans to pay tribute to the group’s legendary late frontman.
In 2017, it was announced that an album of cover songs by Motörhead was set to be released. Featuring a cover of David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’, one of the final songs recorded by the group, Under Cöver was released in early September.
At the time, drummer Mikkey Dee stated that the group may look into doing some tribute shows in the future in honour of Lemmy. “There is a possibility of doing that when the time is right to do it,” Dee told Billboard. “If you love New York pizza and you haven’t had any New York pizza in several years, you’re going to crave that. One day there is maybe going to be a craving for something like this and when there is a craving for it, we have to do it in a proper way.”
“To do it too soon, then it would be a disaster,” he admitted. “But I am totally open to doing something and when there is the right opportunity to do this, I am all for it and I am going to do my damnedest to put something really, really great together.”
Now, in an interview for Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon, guitarist Phill Campbell confirmed that the remaining members are set to hold a small number of tribute shows in the future.
“It’s on the cards, but it’s just gonna be a few select shows. We’re not gonna be touring with it,” Campbell explained. “We’re trying to get these people involved and [look at] their schedules as well. We’ll just do some special shows worldwide, which would be good – a tribute to Lem and to the band maybe, yeah.”
“But it wouldn’t be an ongoing thing; everyone’s too busy. But to do something special… We’re still trying to work on that now.”
Sadly, the chances of a Motörhead tribute such as this coming to Australia seem slim at best, but we can only hope that Campbell and Dee decide to change their minds and bring this wonderful celebration of Lemmy’s life to Aussie fans.
