The drummer for Cleveland heavy metal band Mushroomhead has admitted that they were probably at fault for a fight that broke out between their fans and Slipknot.

Steve ‘Skinny’ Felton addressed the fight, which took place at a show being performed by Slipknot in 1999. It ultimately led to an ongoing feud between the two bands for a little while, on the Talk Tomey Podcast.

The way Metal Injection remembers the feud, Mushroomhead fans started throwing stuff at Slipknot as they were performing. They weren’t about to take it, and members of the band apparently jumped into the crowd and started throwing punches.

According to Felton, the reason it went so public was mostly due to “media hype”. He did admit that Mushroomhead “spent a lot of time complaining about them for nothing,” though.

After that, members of the band saw the entertainment value and played it up for fun. “I mean, at that point, it’s just like a silly fan-fueled and I guess media hype, you know thing to talk about,” he said.

“This is the 90s. Yeah, you know, any sort of news was cool. There wasn’t a whole lot back then. And then you get a feud between bands. It’s kind of East Coast v West Coast type of thing. Oh, Lord, here we go.”

Felton also revealed he’s heard so many different versions of the story that now its like the legend of Bigfoot.

“I heard all about it in the following days, but you know, that’s way before the internet and Facebook’s and things of that nature. So over the course of the next week or whatever I found out, like as far as what was going on, or at least I had heard of what was going on. Then I heard like 20 different stories throughout the years…”

There’s certainly no bad blood between the two bands anymore, he explains. “God Bless them they’re one a biggest bands out there. It proves that masked heavy metal and that style of entertainment is still relevant.”

Slipknot recently revealed the news they are working on new music during lockdown, due to plenty of extra time on their hands.
