Even though they released a new album only last year, heavy metal icons Slipknot are already keen to work on new music, with guitarist Jim Root stating they’re “throwing around” ideas for another record.

With everything in the entire world seeming to be put on hold, it has given musicians a lot of free time to work on new tunes. We’ve seen Metallica hint about new music to come, and Styx bassist has also revealed that quarantine will see them put out a new album.

Now, the legendary metal outfit Slipknot has teased that quarantine might see them shell out some new tunes, even though 2019 saw the collective release Look Outside Your Window.

In a recent interview with Loudwire, guitarist Jim Root discussed that the band is talking about doing new music, as well as that he’s personally working on a new solo album during his downtime.

“Now that we have this bananas insane pandemic thing going on,” he began, “I’ve been trying to force myself to write. I’ve had a lot of people ask me about doing a solo project. I think now I have a little bit of extra time to dedicate to that, so I’ve been writing some stuff that maybe wouldn’t slide in with the Slipknot world.”

In addition to Root saying that he’s keen on a solo project of his own, he noted that vocalist Corey Taylor also “wants to do a solo project that’s outside of Stone Sour” stating, “he’s mentioned that”.

Then, Root got down to the news we’ve been waiting for and said that currently “there’s a lot of different philosophies and ideas and things we’re throwing around with Slipknot for another record, things like that.”

“It’s easy for me to write Slipknot arrangements and ideas. They come kinda naturally to me just because I spent so much time with Paul [Gray, former bassist]. As much as I’ve written on the last two records I don’t have to think about that too much.”

Root continued to elaborate on his current plans for his upcoming solo project, and notes that he’s a bit torn on direction, questioning himself with: “What direction do I go? Do I even think about a direction? Do I just let it naturally come out? Do I use things that I’ve written intended for Slipknot that maybe Slipknot didn’t gravitate towards?”

Although there is no solidified news as to when we’ll see either Root produce his solo-project, or the band sling out new tunes, the talented guitarist finished by saying that “we’ve got time on our hands now,” leaving fans hopeful that quarantine will give us some goods.
