That rock’n’roll, it just won’t go away, Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders has confirmed that the band are in the thick of penning a new album.
It’s been three years since Arctic Monkeys released their last, excellent album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. As NME report, during an Instagram Live on January 13th, drummer Matt Helders confirmed that the band are in the “early stages of trying to write a [new] record”.
The video saw Helders delve into the problems the band were facing in writing the new album due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
“Being separated by the sea is one of them,” Helders acknowledged.“We’re all eager to do it – we would have been doing it by now in a normal time. There’s definitely a desire from our end to do a new record, as soon as we can.”
The drummer detailed that he has spent his time in his Los Angeles home “always tinkering on machines and synths.”
“I’ve got drums here,” he continued, so he’s “always trying to improve on and study certain things”.
This isn’t the first morsel of news we’ve been offered about the forthcoming record, back in December the band’s manager Ian McAndrew revealed that Arctic Monkeys were “working on music”, and had plans to hit the studio before coronavirus restrictions put a damper on the sessions.

“They’re working on music,” he replied. “In this rather disjointed time, the guys are beavering away and I hope that next year they’ll start working on some new songs, new ideas, with a view on a future release.
“There were recording plans in the summertime that got canned as a result of the travel restrictions.”
However, McAndrew acknowledged that “proper work” had begun. “I’m hoping that next year, when the restrictions lift, we’ll be able to get together and get on with it.”
