Music fans are being gifted a bevy of new music festivals lately, including a forest jaunt in Tasmania, a free, two-day all-Aussie event in Sydney and the perfect island escape for dance music lovers in the city’s harbourside.
Now there’s a brand new player on the scene, giving Victoria the newest addition to its music festival calendar, launching during the popular New Year’s Eve celebrations.
So if you’re looking for an alternative to the newly expanded Falls Festival, missed out on tickets to the inaugural NYE On The Hill or Let Them Eat Cake (strangely) doesn’t take your fancy, then this new event will certainly be your ticket.
The new three-day camping festival, cheekily titled New Year’s Evie, is offering the chance to awake to 2014 in a “caring and generous, nurturing, nourishing, intimate bosom” of a bevy of bands, a sizzling BBQ, a giant slip and slide, and locally brewed, ice-cold beer in beautiful bush settings just one hour’s drive from Melbourne.
The inaugural New Year’s Evie takes place from 31st December 2013 to the 2nd January 2014 at Bruzzy’s Farm in Tallarook (the same site used by the team behind Boogie Festival who have just announced the impressive lineup for next Easter’s Boogie 8).
Helping ring in the new year is the inaugural New Year’s Evie lineup is a mix of soul, blues, rock, DJs, punk, dance, and much more.
Top of the bill is the Stax On Soul Revue, born from a wild soul fling at Yah Yah’s, the Stax band pay tribute to the legendary Memphis label of the same name, with peerless renderings of its legendary roster including the likes of Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Carla and Rufus Thomas, Linda Lyndell, Sam and Dave, Albert King, Johnnie Taylor, Eddie Floyd, Isaac Hayes, Little Milton, Booker T and the MG’s – you name it.

Also headed to the first Evie is the tri-voiced gallows blues balladeers of Harmony, featuring Tom Lyngcoln (The Nation Blue), Alex Kastaniotis and Jon Chapple (McLusky), who deliver deliciously gothic gospel rock.
Also on the New Year’s Evie lineup is Stella Angelico, bringing a tour de force of exotic psych-sounds and vodoo soul, the vicious musical cocktail of The Electric Guitars, rollicking country troupe Jemma & Her Wise Young Ambitious Men, and self-described frat rock wannabes Toga Rock (it nine members drawn from bands Barbarion, The Australian Loin Groin Show, Bad News Dude, Dynamo, and more).
There’s also Melbourne blues supergroup Three Kings, classic iconoclasts and rock eccentrics Little Desert, and two piece live electro act IO arriving from Melbourne via New Zealand, and you can only imagine the kinds of wigged-out riffs that will transpire during a set from Blown Cones.
Also bringing in the 2014 soundtrack is the list of New Year’s Evie DJs. There’s the mulleted Triple R presenter LA Pocock, bangin’ tunes into the early hours, Sweet Jelly Roll DJs will spin “surf to rhythm and blues to straight-up blues stuff; a bit of doo-wop, [plus] a bit of ’60s garage.” Clasically trained guitarist turned desk jockey Steven ‘Sabo’ Sabatino will span all manner of genres and decades, and rounding out the troupe is Roller One, returning to Australia after playing 80 shows in 80 countries.
That’s not all, with more live bands and musical features to be announced in the lead-up to New Year’s Evie’s kick-off.
Bruzzy’s Farm promises “no bells and whistles, just memorable and magical good times,” so if you want to take up the offer to ‘let your hair down’, tickets for the first-ever New Years Evie are on sale now via Oztix and ‘Old School Ticket outlets’ (re: record stores) at just $99 (+b/f) for adults and $44 for kids (+ b/f).
