Falls Festival just got even bigger, adding more acts to the lineup while announcing details of its arts and comedy features.

Tickets to Falls Festival 2013 have already sold out at both Lorne and the newly added Byron Bay leg, with tickets still available to the Tasmanian leg in Marion Bay, but all three legs are getting a series of new additions in the latest announcement from festival organisers.

Joining the lineup of headliners Vampire Weekend, Grizzly Bear, The Roots, MGMT, The Wombats, Violent Femmes, !!!, White Denim, Solange, and more, along with the second lineup announce, which added famed former guitarist for The Smiths, Johnny Marr and Philly fuzz-rock favourites The War On Drugs, now there’s more acts to bolster the Falls lineup.

Lorne gets the biggest boost, with a whole extra day of bands, including Canadian rockers Born Ruffians, indie rock staples Dappled Cities, electro songbird Owl Eyes international-storming future soul-funk warriors Hiatus Kaiyote, Melbourne’s The Delta Riggs, singer-songwriter Dustin Tebbutt, garage fuzz faves The Murlocs, the expanded Wolf & Cub, beloved locals Smith Street Band, and rising Aussie hip hop stars Citizen Kay, Jackie Onasis, and Remi.

Also on the Lorne Falls lineup are Anna Lunoe, Ego, Generik, Little Bastard, M4sonic, Motorik Vibe Council, Mustered Courage, Perch Creek Family Jugband, Touch Sensitive, Twinsy, Tyler Touche, Vydamo, Wave Race, and Willow Beats.

Meanwhile a selection of those acts will be added to the Byron leg, including Anna Lunoe, Born Ruffians, Tyler Touche, and Wave Racer, while the New South Wales-based event will get its own unique additions in indie pop band Cub Sport (nee Cub Scouts), Triple J Unearthed winners Lunatics On Pogosticks, the electro-smoothness of Touch Sensitive, local quartet Potato Potato, and an exclusive DJ set from the band leader of headliners The Roots, Questlove.

Despite all the lineup additions, the Hot 8 Brass Band have cancelled on their Falls Festival appearance, with a statement noting: “Due to illness, members of the Hot 8 Brass Band are no longer able to tour Australia this summer.” But organisers have drafted in the nine-piece neo-noir cabaret soul revue that is Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes, taking pride of place as the new marquee act for Boogie Nights, with the fancy dress theme of ‘Intergalactic’ selected for this year.

Also performing at all three legs of the New Year’s bash alongside the Falls Festival 2013 lineup is a selection of comedians providing big laughs. Bearded laugh lothario David Callan leads a pack that includes MICF 2012 Best Newcomer Ronny Chieng, the uniquely wry stylings of David Quirk, as well as Amos Gill, Michael Hing, and Nath Valvo.

While many punters are keen to inspect the new Byron Bay leg of Falls, which will be hosted on a shared part of the Yelgun festival site used for this year’s Splendour In The Grass, festival organisers are pushing for the allure of Tasmania’s Marion Bay leg as the perfect holiday destination.

Providing stunning natural settings, with views of coastlines and mountaintops near its beautiful camping grounds, nearly 60% of the sold out crowd to last year’s Falls Festival made the trip from mainland Australia to turn their festival attendance into a New Year’s vacation, exploring the swell of activity at MONA, Australia’s best food and wine event Taste Festival, and more.

Organisers also recently increased the quantity of the ‘Gimme Shelter’ tickets and ‘Tepee Life’ passes, allowing for camping options in an exclusive full day ticket price for the three-day event. “Just arrive onsite and step straight into a fully pitched tent without the hassle of lugging it all the way from home,” Falls organisers proffer, with Gimme Shelter passes going fast.

Festival Director Paul Pitticco (who bought into Falls Festival alongside Splendour co-founder Jessica Ducrou last year) also explains that “the ticket price is deliberately kept lower than that of its mainland counterparts in Lorne and Byron Bay to allow for patrons additional travel costs.”

The news of Falls Festival Byron Bay selling out arrives as a swathe of the Falls Festival 2013 lineup announce a series of headline sideshows to complement their appearance at the annual arts and music event.

The list of acts that have announced dates and details for Falls sideshows include headliners, the legendary live hip-hop crew, The Roots, a Sydney Opera House show from Grizzly Bear, iconic British guitarist and former Smith, Johnny Marr, Philadelphia’s rock Phavourites The War On Drugs, the one and only alt-RnB queen Solange, buzz-worthy electronic trio London Grammar, Irish singer James Vincent McMorrow, British singer-songwriter Tom Odell, Basque-electrofolktronica act Crystal Fighters, and special co-headline sideshows from rebel rouser Hanni El Khatib and White Denim, in their debut Australian shows.
