It’s been a long time between drinks for Aerosmith, even after they kissed and made up; but on American Idol last night, Steven Tyler forwent his judging duties to take to the stage with his fellow bandmates and play “Legendary Child”, the band’s first new music in nearly a decade.
The track features a return to the band’s classic rock sound, with guitarist Joe Perry’s blues-tinged licks and Steven Tyler’s trademark vocals, though beginning to show their age (sounding more like Lemmy from Motorhead), still nails his trademark harmonies and lothario lines like “makin’ love at 17.”
Following the Idol performance, the studio version of the single has surfaced online. The tune is to be included on the soundtrack for the forthcoming GI Joe sequel, and according to Classic Rock, it’s the finished result of an abandoned track the quintet originally put together back in 1991.
“Legendary Child” is also the first taste of Aerosmith’s forthcoming album, Music From Another Dimension. The new record will be the band’s fifteenth studio album and their first in eight years since 2004’s covers LP, Honkin’ On Bobo. In fact, it’s the band’s first original material in eleven years, from 2001’s Just Push Play (featuring the radio hit “Jaded.”).
Originally due for a September release, Billboard has now confirmed the album will drop on August 28 following the band’s “Global Warming” tour. Perry recently claiming that the album “is a lot more band-written stuff than there has been in the recent past.”
Is this a return to the golden era of Aerosmith? or just another aging band making a cash-grab with a new record? At the very least, it’ll help fund Tyler’s famously expensive, *ahem* ‘tastes.’
