Brooklyn femcee Azealia Banks has used her twitter account, under the handle Young Rapunxel, as the first point of contact about info regarding the swathe of recorded material she’s been working on.
First there was “Jumanji” – the first taste of a forthcoming mixtape – which dropped onto the net, then her EP, 1991 leaked online in full, just hours ahead of an expected release internationally. Her twitter was also the site for some controversy with the pint-sized Lil’ Kim, hip-hop star T.I., and more recently, a drama involving dropping Lady Gaga manager, Troy Carter.
Banks however is getting sick of the public attention and ‘accessibility’ of her account, and claimed she was deleting her twitter account.
Billboard reports that she took to Tumblr over the weekend, in a post entitled ‘No Longer Wishing To Be A Rapper’, Banks wrote:
“I never was…. and as soon as I started paying attention to bullshit urban media, I started getting myself in trouble. From now on I’m a vocalist, and will not be associating myself with the “rap game”… or whatever the fuck that means… no more twitter for me… it makes me entirely too accessible. Catch me on tumblr… it’ll be more interesting.”
It seems though that she’s already gone against her word, returning to twitter to announce a brand new track from her forthcoming mixtape, Fantasea (originally titled Fantastic) due July 4th.

“Aquababe” contains a suitably aquatic theme, digitised bubble effects and all, to tie in with Bank’s forthcoming ‘Mermaid Ball’ shows, which Banks also tweeted about:
I like for the Mermaid Ball to be more of a big party & less of a traditional show.. so i have to make sure all the gags & effects are kool!

So much for “no more twitter for me”, the rapper… *ahem* ‘vocalist’ is confirmed to appear in Australia for the first time at this year’s Splendour In The Grass, and is already one of this year’s most hotly-tipped acts after only a handful of singles set the blogosphere alight. Namely, the minute-and-a-half long L8R and her potty-mouthed breakout single, 212.
Her debut album, Broke With Expensive Taste, is still due for September, but you can have a listen to the undersea beats of “Aquababe” below:
