The prolific rock star who seemingly never sleeps, Dave Grohl is currently at the Sundance Film Festival where is promoting his directorial debut, Sound City: Real To Reel, the all-star documentary about the LA Recording Studios of the same name, which screens for one night only to Australian audiences on Thursday 31st January.
News arrived yesterday that the Foo Fighter had also signed a worldwide publishing deal with the Kobalt Music Group to distribute the rockumentary’s accompanying star-studded soundtrack, now Grohl has more exciting news, teasing that he plans to bring the celebrity lined band he formed to promote Sound City to the world’s stages.
“We plan to do shows all over the world,” Grohl tells Billboard. “When I came up with the idea of taking all these performers to the live stage a few months ago, my idea [was] to have video presentations between each performance. We’ll have that at the next shows.”
A worldwide tour from Grohl’s supergroup would hopefully take in Australia, also likely considering the Foo Fighters’ love of our country. It would just be more a matter of getting the schedules of the lineup to coalesce.
The Sound City Players’ ranks contain major musicians featured in the film and soundtrack who have a history with the LA recording studios, Grohl’s all-star band was previously thought to be a one-off deal, performing together for the first time at a concert at the Sundance Film Festival‘s Park City Live show earlier in the month.
The supergroup that puts all over supergroups to shame features Grohl alongside Stevie Nicks (Fleetwood Mack), John Fogerty (Creedence Clearwater Revival), Rick ‘Jessie’s Girl’ Springfield, Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick), Brad Wilk (Rage Against The Machine), Alain Johannes (Queens of the Stone Age), Chris Goss (producer), Lee Ving (Fear), Jessy Greene (Geraldine Fibbers), and the Wallflowers’ Rami Jafee.
On top of that, Sound City Players also features Grohl’s Nirvana/Foo Fighters bandmates Krist Novoselic, Pat Smear, Nate Mendel, Taylor Hawkins, and Chris Shiflett, and the all-star troupe whipped through covers of Fleetwood Mac, Queens of the Stone Age, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and much more in their inaugural show (concert of the year?).“We plan to do shows all over the world… my idea [was] to have video presentations between each performance. We’ll have that at the next shows.” – Dave Grohl

Speaking about Sound City’s inception the rock star director says: “I thought I’d pay tribute (to Sound City) by making a short film and putting it on YouTube. It was right around the 20th anniversary of Nevermind so I thought this will be a nice sidebar that I’m reunited with the (sound)board that made that album.”
“Then I got the shortlist of everyone who made an album there and it’s not a short list,” he adds. “I called out to as many people as I could, thinking maybe some of them would want to talk and all of them wanted to talk.”
Including Sir Paul McCartney, who led Grohl, Novoselic, and Smear into writing the Beatle-led jam ‘Cut Me Some Slack’ that featured at McCartney’s 1212 benefit concert performance.
In-between his Sound City commitments, signing worldwide deals, hosting a radio series, playing drums on the new Queens of the Stone Age album, and speaking at the forthcoming SXSW 2013 it’s no wonder that Foo Fighters are currently on official leave of absence.
Well, technically, considering that all three of Grohl’s bandmates have been along for the Sound City ride.
“It’s funny, we don’t really consider this the Foo Fighters,” Grohl told MTV News. “We’re Rick Springfield’s backing band, we’re john Fogerty’s backing band. We’re not up there playing ‘Everlong’ every night, we’re just hoping our heroes get up on stage and play,” he says.
Grohl also teased that Foo Fighters have begun work on the follow-up to 2011′s Wasting Light. ”We know exactly what’s coming next,” saying, “we have really awesome, big plans for the next album… I have the music for the next record and we’re going to start working on it once we finish doing all this stuff.”
