Falls Festival 2013 Offering Exclusive Presale For Byron Bay Locals
The organisers of the Falls Festival are giving local Byron Bay residents exclusive priority access for the New Year’s Eve festival’s debut on the New South Wales coast. From 9am on Tuesday 27th August, local residents from Byron Shire and South Tweed will be offered a limited allocation of two and three day passes to this year’s event from byronbay.fallsfestival.com.au/locals, as well as an NYE single night ticket at a cost of $99 (+b/f) exclusive to the localised presale. Byron residents can purchase up to four tickets per person in any number of combinations and only the purchaser needs to be a local, meaning other passes can be used for visiting friends if need be. All other Byron punters that want to catch the mighty Falls Festival 2013 lineup are still eligible to register for the ticket ballot before 12 midday Monday 26th August at the official website. Tim Rogers, AC/DC Star In New Ad For AFL Finals
Anyone who caught You Am I frontman offering his charming tales at the recent Presentation Night with Richmond star Matthew Richardson and host Francis Leach knows, Tim Rogers loves his footy. The musician is proving that fact once more by starring in a new promotional advert for the AFL in the lead-up to the season finals. Set to the soundrack of AC/DC classic ‘Long Way To The Top’, the new 30 second TV spot features the musician directly addressing the viewer about the metaphorical journey to the Grand Final to “witness greatnes.” The TV spot is part of an overall campaign that will roll out across print, radio, and digital. It’s not the first time that Rogers has lit up the small screen, having already played host on the cabaret variety show Studio At The Memo and made his film debut in fantasy musical The Boy Castaways opposite leading star Megan Washington and singer Paul Capsis. New Song Selections From NIN, Eminem, The Fratellis, & A Bizarre Arcade Fire Cover
There’s been so many new tunes that have surfaced recently that it’s been hard to keep up. Firstly, is another new track from Trent Reznor ahead of the release of the new Nine Inch Nails album, Hesitation Marks, due this September. The third taste from the new NIN record is in stark contrast to what fans have already heard in the David Lynch-directed video for ‘Came Back Haunted‘ and the minimalist groove of “Copy Of A”. In fact, the charged three-plus minutes of ‘Everything’ is hands-down the happiest Reznor has sounded in years… if ever and the major chords and shiny vocal harmonies that punctuate the hook are likely to shock some long-term fans.
Speaking of Reznor, the latest entry in the videogame franchise he once scored – Call Of Duty – has teamed up with another high-profile musician for the latest entry in their blockbuster series. Eminem’s newest single ‘Survival’ was premiered in the trailer for Call Of Duty: Ghosts and is the first taste of Slim Shady’s much anticipated follow-up to 2010’s Recovery. The rock-infused track features guest vocals from singer Liz Rodriguez as Eminem spits some aggressive lyrics over slabs of distorted guitar. It’s not the first time the rap superstar has dabbled in the world of videogames, having lent several exclusive tracks to the 2009 Guitar Hero spin-off, DJ Hero.
Another act making a comeback is Scottish rock band The Fratellis, who have released their first new music in five years. “I’ll be the comeback kid/on his way home from hell” sings guitarist Jon Fratelli on ‘Seven Nights Seven Days’, the Glaswegian trio’s first new material since 2008’s Here We Stand. The track features the jumpy up-tempo feel that characterises the ‘Dolly Dagger’ hit-makers, but also has a slight countrified tilt to it in its twanging guitar, humming organ, and rolling bar piano lines. The single heralds the band’s third studio album, this October’s We Need Medicine, which sees the band reuniting after pursuing various side-projects – including Jon Fratelli’s stint in The Codeine Club and bassist Barry Fratelli touring with The Twang.
Last but not least, while art-rock fans everywhere wait with baited breath on the October release of the new album from forthcoming Big Day Out co-headliners Arcade Fire, the Canadian collective have been treated to a rather bizarre but interesting tribute from a popular 80s band. Tears For Fears, as in the ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’-penning UK duo who haven’t released an album in nearly 10 years, have recorded a cover version of ‘Ready To Start’, from Arcade Fire’s Grammy winning 2010 album, The Suburbs, and to say it’s strange is an understatement. It starts out unfamiliarly, as Tears For Fears vocalist Roland Orzabal soothes over some plonky keyboard strings before the track plots a course through the song’s more familiar hooks against some rollicking drum n bass grooves. Go on, take it for a spin.
Posthumous Poetry Readings By The Doors’ Jim Morrison Leaks Online
An American Prayer is one of the most divisive Doors albums, using recordings taken from 1978, where the three surviving members of the influential rock band took poetry readings from their recently deceased frontman, which Jim Morrison recorded in 1971, and set them to music. It’s a woolly part of Doors lore, but it now appears that there was another series of poetry readings recoded by Morrison from between March 1969 and December 1970, with selections from both sessions now turning up on a bootleg called The Lost Paris Tapes that’s been circulating online. As is often the case with long lost unauthorised material of this nature, the recordings are rough and mixed in quality, but offer a pretty fascinating insight into one of rock’s most enduring icons at his most raw. You’d think given their rock star lifestyle that Jane’s Addiction wouldn’t have much trouble meeting new people, but perhaps life on the road is getting a little lonely for the American rock band as they pay cheeky tribute to the worlds of eHarmony and Tinder in their latest single. Released to coincide with their current North American and Canada Tour, the video for new single ‘Another Soulmate’ takes inspiration from the song’s title and features stills from strange singles who are unlucky in love seeking their romantic match. There’s even cameos from band members Perry Farrell, Stephen Perkins, Chris Chaney, and guitarist Dave Navarro, whose profile claims: “I know every sexual position – and I like to try them all in one night.” Ewww.
