You don’t have to be a music industry expert to know that 2013 has been the year that music streaming services boomed in Australia.
Few have grown as big or as iconic as the Swedish-born Spotify, which celebrated its 1st Anniversary in Australia back in May by revealing its official streaming charts.
Now with the year drawing to a close, the popular music platform – which celebrated its 5th birthday in October – has revealed a list of the year’s most streamed artists, albums, and songs as a number of usual musical suspects come out on top as the most listened of the last 12 months.
The results are drawn from the listening habits of Spotify’s 24 millions global users, who racked up a staggering 4.5 billion hours (almost 50,000 years worth) of streaming this year alone.
Topping the results as the most streamed local artist in Australia for 2013 is Sydney producer Harley Streten, best known to the world as the award-snaffling producer Flume. The 22 year old beatmaker’s ARIA winning self-titled debut was the most streamed album in Australia, while his single ‘Holdin On’ featured among the Top 10 most streamed songs of 2013.
While tje forthcoming Big Day Out act and Chet Faker collaborator was the most streamed male on Spotify, it was (surprise, surprise) New Zealand sensation Lorde (who’s rumoured to be working with Flume) that took the honour of being the most streamed female artist in Australia. The 17-year old songwriter capped off a ridiculously successful year with her single ‘Royals’ being the third most streamed song in the country. The results are drawn from the listening habits of Spotify’s 24 millions global users, who racked up a staggering 4.5 billion hours (almost 50,000 years worth) of streaming this year alone.
Lorde was also named the ‘most viral’ new artist on the worldwide Spotify Chart, which demonstrates the most shared tracks on the service each week.

Despite her staggering success Down Under, with the second fastest selling album of the year, Lorde didn’t crack the Top 10 most streamed females of 2013 on the global scale, where Rihanna took out the #1 spot, pushing Lana Del Rey and Pink into #2 and #3 respectively.
Meanwhile, Daft Punk are named the most streamed artist in Australia overall, with the Parisian robotic pair’s Random Access Memories ranked among the Top 10 most streamed albums of the year both in Australia and internationally.
Additionally, their massive lead single ‘Get Lucky’ was the #1 most streamed song in Australia, the most shared song on Spotify worldwide, and the fourth most streamed song globally. No surprise given that it racked up the most streams in a single day upon its release on 20th April, racking up 1.5 million streams in just 24 hours.
But Flume, Lorde, and Daft Punk bow down to ‘Thrift Shop’ hit-makers and Future Music Festival 2014 headliners, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.
The US duo – one of the year’s highest paid hip hop acts – are crowned as the most streamed artist in the world for 2013, with their hit ‘Can’t Hold Us’ being the most streamed song amongst Spotify’s 24 million users worldwide.
‘Thrift Shop’ came in close behind as the third most streamed song of the year, with Avicii’s dubstep-meets-folk single ‘Wake Me Up’ sandwiched between Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ hits as the second most streamed song of the year.
“Congratulations to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis who achieved incredible success in 2013,” remarked Spotify’s Head Of Content, Steve Savoca, of the most streamed artists of 2013 results. “It’s also amazing to see young artists like Lorde, becoming sensations almost overnight, She’s a truly thrilling discovery for Spotify users and will help to re-shape the pop music landscape.”
