If there’s anything that screams ‘holiday tradition’ more than Santa, commercialism, and Boxing Day hangovers, it’s the cheesy Christmas song.
The folks at Triple J certainly know it and have embraced the yuletide genre wholeheartedly with a campaign to claim a chart-topping Christmas single of their very own, and in true holiday spirit, putting all the proceeds towards charity.
Partnering up with Red Cross Australia, Triple J have wrangled an all-star Aussie cast of for ‘Christmas Number One’, a cheeky charity single bonanza that lampoons charity singles, with lyrics that spell out their aims of crowning the #1 chart position come Christmas morning.
The tune is written and spearheaded by the station’s own Lindsay ‘The Doctor’ McDougall, and in the vein of the humorous Triple J cover of Muse’s ‘Survival’ last year, the Frenzal Rhomb guitarist has again enlisted some high profile members of the Aussie music fraternity for his Christmas ensemble.
Helping raise holiday spirits and Red Cross donations is a chorus featuring Grinspoon’s Phil Jamieson, Bertie Blackman, Elizabeth Rose, two thirds of Thundamentals, Joyride, Thomas Rawle of Papa Vs Pretty, Unearthed all-stars Asta and Lunatics On Pogosticks, and various Triple J Presenters.
Also joining the good Doctor in the yuletide supergroup is Abbe May (vocals/guitar), Andy Bull and Bree Tranter (voclas/keys), Lawrence Pike of PVT (drums), Touch Sensitive (bass), and even Bananas In Pyjamas (famous fruit duties).
The accompanying video performance contains a whole stocking full of cheeky Christmas clichés too, from tacky woollen jumpers to santa caps aplenty, all viewed through a slow-panning, vaseline-smeared camera lens.

Even if the Triple J supergroup doesn’t make chart history (for the second time this year), ‘Christmas Number One’ still has a good chance of taking out the #1 spot on another chart; the station’s own Hottest 100, with voting for the year’s biggest and best songs opening on 20th December as the likes of Lorde, Pond, The Preatures, Jagwar Ma, and Cloud Control offer their own voting choices for the annual music poll.
