Influential New York band Television are headed to Australia this October for a special one-off performance as part of All Tomorrow’s Parties, playing their landmark 1977 debut Marquee Moon live in its entirety at Release The Bats in Altona.
Television lead the the second round of acts added to the Halloween-themed Release The Bats edition of ATP, who are returning to the Westgate Entertainment Centre and Grand Star reception in Altona, Melbourne, following the success of the two-day I’ll Be Your Mirror festival co-curated by The Drones earlier this year.
The special one-day Release The Bats already has another live iconic album performance scheduled, in headliners The Breeders, who will be playing their 1993 album The Last Splash in full, but the addition of Television playing Marquee Moon is a nice Halloween gift to Australian fans of the heritage NYC band.
Their Marquee Moon performance is earmarked as being an exclusive to the October event, and the band’s only Victorian show on their Australian visit. Television’s debut album, released in 1977 on Elektra records, is considered a modern classic, transforming the ideas and forms of punk into something that wasn’t quite new wave yet, but certainly possessed a sophistication that was a far cry from the Sex Pistols and The Clash.
The influence of Marquee Moon, especially in the twin, pincering guitar lines and its epic 10 minute title track, filtered right through New York’s musical history and can still be heard in modern bands like Interpol and The Strokes, while Television’s legacy as part of the legendary CBGB put them in a realm of artists the likes of Patti Smith, Talking Heads, and the Ramones, in developing a new American sound. …The addition of Television playing Marquee Moon is a nice Halloween gift to Australian fans of the heritage NYC band.
Joining Television on the new round of acts confirmed to join the already announced lineup are Balam Acab, the solo banner for 21 year old Pennsylvanian Alec Koone, and Pop Crimes – The Songs of Rowland S. Howard, a supergroup formed by guitarist Mick Harvey of friends, family, and collaborators to pay tribute to the former Birthday Party maverick, who died of liver cancer in 2009.
The tribute will cover material from each facet Howard’s musical legacy, including The Birthday Party, Young Charlatans, These Immortal Souls and Rowland’s solo work.
The rest of the ATP Release The Bats lineup includes The Jesus Lizard, The Scientists, Fuck Buttons, Lightning Bolt, and many more.
The one-day festival takes place on Saturday October 26th 2013, starting from midday and runs until 1am, headliners will finish by 11pm with around 14 acts in total set to play live.
Returning to the indoor/outdoor environs of the Westgate Entertainment Centre and Grand Star Reception – just a stones throw from the CBD in Altona – after its successful run hosting the recent I’ll Be Your Mirror Melbourne. And as organisers promise wryly, “no – it won’t be as hot as last time.”
Again, there will be two stages, a cinema, art exhibition, and an amazing food court with the event limited to just 5,000 attendees. With the extracurricular highlight of I’ll Be Your Mirror, Pricasso, returning to paint some special Halloween portraits in his own inimitable style (hint: he doesn’t use his hands).
If Release The Bats is anything like its Drones-curated forebear, which had our Tone Deaf reviewer raving: “Was it all a dream? Bizarrely it wasn’t… a weekend of impeccably selected music, food, film, and culture.” Then music lovers are in for a Halloween-themed heaven.
