Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic has shared a lengthy post, expressing support for US President Donald Trump’s latest statement regarding the Black Lives Matter protests in the wake of the senseless murder of unarmed African American man George Floyd.
On June 1st, Trump gave a universally-condemned press conference that saw him acknowledge that he would be mobilising the US military to be deployed against protestors, declaring himself a “law and order President”.
This bizarre and disturbing statement was written off by everyone with two brain cells to rub together. However, Krist Novoselic seems to have found some truth to it.
“Wow!!! I know many of you can’t stand him, however, Trump knocked it out of the park with this speech,” Novoselic wrote n a post shared to his private Facebook account.
Krist Novoselic recounted that he “drove from Wahkiakum to Seattle and back today and have seen [sic] countless fellow Washingtonians on the road.
“I did not see any violence—but a Tesla supercharging station at an Auburn mall was closed off by police. Driving, I passed by regular folks who are already stressed by the Covid. Now, social media and television are looping images of societal breakdown.”
Whilst the musician doesn’t back Trump’s decision to send in armed forces, writing “should not be sending troops into states—and he legally might not be able to anyway,” the Nirvana bassist applauded the President for his “strong and direct” tone.

Krist continued: “I have been watching the images in the media and thinking about how polarised our country is. I mean, even wearing medical masks in public can be seen as a political statement! The violence (and not the protests) appear as a leftist insurrection. Imagine if so-called “patriot militias” were raising this kind of hell? If this were the case, left-wing people would welcome federal intervention.
“Most Americans want peace in their communities and President Trump spoke to this desire. Never mind the legal details that few understand – Trump said he would stop the violence and this speaks to many.”

That’s enough nonsense for one day. This week, a number of country-wide protests will be taking place across Australia, in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter marches in the US, and the systemic suffering of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders at the hands of police.
There have been 432 Aboriginal deaths in custody since the 1991 royal commission, and not a single conviction. You can find a list of protests below.
