Sampa the Great, Briggs, Black Rock Band and Opiuo led the first music announcement for this year’s Wide Open Space festival. The organisers have now added more than a dozen names to the already teeming lineup.

Wide Open Space takes place at Ross River Resort in Central Australia. It’s 80kms east of Alice Springs on the land of the Arrernte people. For three days this May it will become a festival that values connection with nature, a community atmosphere, and lineup diversity.

They’re really delivering on the latter this year, and the festival’s second lineup announcement is a doozy. New Zealand dubstep duo TRUTH lead the pack, along with San Francisco via Melbourne DJ Hypnotech. Theatrical electronic duo The Ironing Maidens will bring the satire, while Melbourne hip hop-infused bass producer Kodiak Kid is also heading out to the desert.

Southeast Desert Metal call themselves the most isolated metal band in the world, but they’ll be a lot closer to home than the rest of the WOS artists. Wirangu woman Kirra Voller is also locked in for the three day event, along with Tutup Mulut, Big Fucking Robots, D-sens and a bucketload more.

The event is now in its 11th year and they’ve got a handle on how to put together a lineup. “We take a very wide approach to programming the WOS music experience,” said festival director Scott Large. “All of us behind the scenes have restless tastes in music and we like the festival to introduce people to acts they may not normally check out.

“We definitely put a lot of time into getting the flow right so each stage is a journey through various styles each day.”
