“The whole idea is that you can’t even get in unless you’re 40-plus,” vocalist Steve Clisby says of the new ’70s, ’80s and ’90s club night he is hosting with legendary Sydney DJ Stephen Ferris.
The pair will take over the Basement on March 3 for their inaugural 40up night, featuring Clisby’s five-piece band, Ferris on the decks, and a bunch of special guests throughout the night. Each subsequent night will have a special theme.
“This is how you exercise your right to be over 40 and still party, without worrying about the millennials getting in the way,” Clisby explains. You may remember him from the 2013 season of The Voice, where he teamed up with judges Seal and Delta Goodrem.
“We’ve taken the dinner, dance show concept and turned it on its head. People are always telling me that the thing they love most about my gigs is the chance to get up and dance like they used to – to the music they love. Now there’s a show especially for them.”
This makes sense, considering the birth of disco in the late ’70s paved the way for the club scene.
“We want to get the 40-plus crowd out to party and have a little fun,” Clisby continues. “It’s an alternative to a seated concert – this is more about the audience’s love affair with the dance floor.
“There’s nothing quite like this in Australia that caters specifically for 40-somethings and baby boomers. It’s all about the original music, the dance era and the fun that surrounded that time, but given a fresh, contemporary feel. This makes being older cool.
