The Internet is currently having a field day trying to work out how Migos managed to take home a American Music Award in the pop/rock category.
If you’re not one to pay attention to the word of music awards, then let us tell you right now that the American Music Awards took place earlier today.
Undoubtedly, the most successful artists at the awards were Taylor Swift and Camila Cabello who each took home four awards. However, the most confusing honour of the night happened to be bestowed upon hip-hop trio Migos.
This year’s award for ‘Favourite Duo Or Group’ in the pop/rock category saw a couple of expected nominations by way of Imagine Dragons and Maroon 5, however, it was the inclusion of Migos that appeared to be the most perplexing.
While artists such as Imagine Dragons and Maroon 5 are undoubtedly groups that play pop/rock music, Migos are a hip-hop trio whose trap sounds are rather popular, but that appears to be the closest they get to that definition.
Understandably, folks on the Internet are trying their best to work out just how this happened.
Damn these music genres getting all messed up…word is Migos won best pop/rock group. Can’t wait for Drakes jazz award 🤷🏼♂️#AmericanMusicAwards

I’m sorry #AMAs but how is @Migos a pop/rock duo? They are rap. @Imaginedragons should have won!!!

What a joke. They’re a rap/hip-hop group. That has literally nothing to do with pop/rock. Should have gone to Imagine Dragons. Like you couldn’t nominate a 3rd legitimate duo/group that’s pop/rock?? 🙄 pic.twitter.com/yteO0lXhE6

Even Migos appeared to be taken aback by their win, with members Offset and Quavo appearing surprised when they accepted their award. “We did not know we was winning this at all,” explained Quavo while delivering a brief speech.
Of course, this isn’t the first time that an artist has been nominated for a rather inexplicable award. Why, you might remember how back in 2015, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s Quarters! was nominated for Best Jazz Album at the ARIAs.
The following year, the genre-defying band were in the news again when they took home the award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Album for their eighth album, Nonagon Infinity, causing numerous traditionally-heavy bands to defend the group’s win.
While it seems as though the American Music Awards might have just bent the definition of ‘pop’ for Migos’ win, it’s still good to see a hard-working group get honoured in such a way by the music industry. Who knows, maybe next year we’ll be back to seeing traditional pop/rock bands nominated once again?
