Phoebe Bridgers has released the first taste of her second album. ‘Garden Song’ comes with a bong-tinged music video directed by the songwriter’s brother Jackson Bridgers.

Los Angeles singer-songwriter, guitarist and game collaborator Phoebe Bridgers has released the beautiful indie folk number ‘Garden Song’. Bridgers’ ace guitar work and emotive lead vocals recall Elliott Smith, but she doesn’t get bogged down in the influence with ‘Garden Song’ pointing towards an exciting new chapter for the 25-year-old musician.

Bridgers hasn’t exactly been keeping a low profile since releasing her debut album Stranger in the Alps in 2017. She visited Australia for a sold out tour in February 2019. Just weeks earlier Bridgers and Conor Oberst surprise-dropped the eponymous debut album from their band Better Oblivion Community Center.

Bridgers also forms one third of indie rock super-trio Boygenius along with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus. The likes of NPR Music and Consequence of Sound named the group’s self-titled EP one of 2018’s best albums.

More recently Bridgers teamed up with The National’s Matt Berninger on the track ‘Walking On a String’. It was recorded for Zach Galifianakis’ Between Two Ferns: The Movie. Bridgers and Berninger also made a cameo in the film, performing the song in a bar.

Bridgers capped off 2019 with a couple of covers. She contributed a version of Tom Waits’ ‘Georgia Lee’ to the Come On Up to the House: Women Sing Waits compilation. And right in time for the holiday season Bridgers called in Fiona Apple and Berninger to create an updated version of Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘7 O’Clock News/Silent Night’.

Profits from the latter went to reproductive health care non-profit Planned Parenthood. “Happy Holidays to everyone whose family has been literally or figuratively torn apart by Donald Trump,” Bridgers said in a statement. “And to my racist, xenophobic, misogynistic, hypocritical family members, fuck you. Thanks Fiona, Matt, Simon, and Garfunkel.”
