Close to five years since they first appeared on the scene, Melbourne’s Private Function are looking to the past for their next release, announcing a compilation of early recordings today.

Dubbed The First Two Tapes On A 12”, the upcoming vinyl collection sees the group compiling the tracks from their 2016 tape, Six Smokin’ Songs, and the tunes from their 2017 EP, Rock In Roll. In keeping with the artwork featured on the latter, the release features a Subway-inspired colour scheme, with the cover artwork doing exactly what it says on the tin and showing both of the group’s early tapes in a footlong sub.

Furthering that theme, the compilation will be available on both ‘Italian Herb And Cheese’ (green and yellow splatter) and ‘Extra Olives black’. While each record also comes with a Subway employment application form, 10 random copies will come with a letter of recommendation signed by the band.

First releasing their Six Smokin’ Songs EP in late 2016, the tape – whose artwork serves as a parody of the anti-smoking messages that adorn cigarette packages – was released weeks before Private Function had even played their first show, which took place alongside the likes of Amyl And The Sniffers in Yah Yah’s famous 2am slot. Close to a full year later, the group followed things up with the release of their Rock In Roll EP, which was launched thanks to a listening party at the Fitzroy public toilets.

Since the release of these early tapes, the group have gone on to reach even greater heights, including ripping off Metallica for their debut album, St. Anger, and hitting the ARIA top ten thanks to the release of their second album, Whose Line Is It Anyway?.

Currently, Private Function are one of the numerous bands who have been impacted by COVID-related border closures and gig cancellations, with their long-awaited album tour recently being disrupted by the aforementioned issues. Despite this, a handful of shows are currently slated to go ahead, including a gig at the Ettamogah Pub on July 24th. Tickets to that one are still available, and with the likes of These New South Whales, Good Morning, Romero, and more in tow, it’s bound to be one hell of a time.

Meanwhile, Private Function’s The First Two Tapes On A 12” is available to order now. PF STILL ON TOP!
