The five-track debut EP from Kiwi songstress Lorde is a stunning and promising introduction to New Zealand’s new powerhouse, ready to roll at the ripe age of 16.
The Love Club shows off Lorde, real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor, at her most raw, edgy and slick, with boppy beats and impressive vocal runs littered across the EP.
She’s been compared to similar female stunners like Marina & The Diamonds, fellow Kiwi Kimbra, and even superstar Beyonce, if all the glitz and attitude was stripped back.
Though there’ll be no brushing her off as just a Kimbra wannabe – Lorde has created something uniquely her own here on The Love Club.
Opener ‘Bravado’ shows off her stunning vocal ability with a powerful falsetto on top of a skippy beat. Quips like “I was raised up to be admired, to be noticed” prove she’s mature beyond her years and shows an earnest talent with words that has us head-banging and shoulder-swaying along with each listen.
Lead single ‘Royals’ is rife with finger snaps and attitude and is catchy as hell. MIA inspired ‘Million Dollar Bills’ is bold and slick; verses are minimal but build to a punchy chorus that roll every time.
The production is superb, and her lyricism is bittersweet, with naïve musings on ‘The Love Club’ rich with flavour. Pulsating closer ‘Biting Down’ is deep, dark and, for lack of a better word, badass.
Her tracks are sultry and hip, oozing an attitude of cool, backed up nicely with her powerhouse voice and more talent yet to share.
Lorde has effortlessly mastered the cute and sexy, churning out strong singles that will sure enough enable this high schooler to become a strong force on the scene.
